Thus, the Bhagavan has manifestly and perfectly awakened to the emptiness of all phenomena by their very nature. It is similar to saying, "Thus I believe." All phenomena, such as the Buddha and form, are non-existent in ultimate reality. Therefore, the meaning of saying that all phenomena are the Buddha's phenomena is also the same. To illustrate this with an example: it is like a person possessing a human body and becoming a large body. The teacher Kamalashila said that the meaning of this seems to be that possessing a body is likened to the body of a Bodhisattva, and a large body is likened to the body of a Buddha. It should be explained as follows: like a person with a small body gradually growing and becoming larger, the larger body is referred to as a large body in relation to the previous one. Similarly, the minds of all sentient beings, which are empty of truth, gradually purify their obscurations, and finally, when all obscurations are exhausted, they transform into the Dharmakaya of a Buddha. This is the meaning of that example. If it is done in this way, it may be in accordance with the intention. Then, Subhuti asked, "Although such an example of a body is not established as a body in ultimate reality, is it established as such in conventional terms?" The Bhagavan granted it, saying, "It is so, it is so." Furthermore, a Bodhisattva, through conventional terms like illusion, needs to generate the intention to establish immeasurable sentient beings in non-abiding Nirvana, but in ultimate reality, there are no sentient beings to be established in it. This is shown as follows: If a Bodhisattva thinks, "Due to clinging to reality, I will completely liberate all sentient beings," then that one should not be called a Bodhisattva who knows the meaning of selflessness. The reason is, if asked whether there is such a thing as a Bodhisattva in ultimate reality, Subhuti replied, "No, Bhagavan." The Bhagavan said to Subhuti, "Because of the reason that it does not exist, all the pure phenomena of the Tathagata are sentient beings without the self-nature of a person, without life, and without a person." In short, "I" am the one who obtains. If one approaches with clinging to reality, thinking, "This is the phenomenon to be obtained," then it is said to be someone with arrogance who falsely believes in the existence of what does not exist, which is unreasonable, because if it is truly established, it cannot be transformed.

It has already been said above that one should not cling to obtaining and what is obtained, etc., in relation to anything. These explain how to meditate on selflessness. Then, regarding leading sentient beings to nirvana, not only should one not cling to reality, but even holding a Buddha-field is merely nominal; one should not cling to it as real. This shows: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva thinks, 'I should perfectly accomplish the array of the field of the place where I will attain complete enlightenment as ultimately real,' if he clings to it and expresses it in words, that too should not be spoken or clung to in that way. The reason is that those arrays of the Buddha-field are merely gathered and assembled in conventional truth, existing like illusions; other than that, there is no array that is truly established, because the Tathagata has said so. Therefore, one speaks of the arrays of the Buddha-field nominally. If a Bodhisattva thinks, 'Forms and so forth are without a self of a person and without a self of phenomena,' if he believes and realizes this, then the Tathagata calls him a great Bodhisattva who has realized selflessness. This also explains that one must meditate on the two selflessnesses. Then, how does the Tathagata have the wisdom that sees the meaning of selflessness? This shows that the Tathagata has five special eyes: The Blessed One asked Subhuti, 'Does the Tathagata have the flesh eye, the divine eye, the wisdom eye, the Dharma eye, and the Buddha eye?' Subhuti replied, 'The Tathagata has those eyes.' In general, the five eyes have different scopes in how they see objects, but here, in connection with the Buddha, the flesh eye directly sees all subtle and coarse forms of the world; the divine eye sees the order of birth and death of sentient beings, and so forth; the wisdom eye sees all subtle and coarse selflessness; the Dharma eye sees all conventional distinctions; and the Buddha eye directly sees all phenomena encompassed by the two truths as they are. Among these, the flesh eye and the divine eye are the eye sense or the sense consciousness that relies on it, while the other three are mind consciousness. However,
