Those who are immature cannot give, as it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "One who has completely transcended the desire for existence cannot bestow other actions, because the co-actor has ceased." As it is said. Subhuti, I know and understand with clairvoyance that in the past, countless eons ago, and even before the time of the Buddha Dipamkara, there appeared eighty-four kotis of hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. I pleased them with offerings, service, and so on, without displeasing them or causing them annoyance. The merit I accumulated from doing so, compared to the merit of writing this sutra in the degenerate age of the future, the latter accumulation of merit is greater. The former accumulation of merit, even if divided into a hundred parts, would not even come close to one part of the latter. Similarly, it cannot be compared in terms of thousands, millions, numbers, measures, counts, examples, comparisons, or reasons. All of these are examples, but the parts differ in size and quantity, the examples are different, the comparisons are unequal, the reasons are different, and the counts cannot be counted equally. If one were to clearly distinguish and explain how much merit they would increase and hold, saying, "This is such an accumulation of merit," then beings of inferior intelligence would not believe it, their minds would become confused, and they would be extremely disturbed. This Dharma category, although small in text, is vast in meaning and inconceivable. Moreover, the fully ripened fruit of practicing this meaning is also inconceivable. The term "fully ripened fruit" does not only refer to the fruit of maturation, but also includes the fruit of similar cause, the fruit of dominance, and the fruit of separation. Such an example has occurred before, but it was spoken with regard to different meanings. Furthermore, the Blessed One asked Subhuti, "How should one who has entered the Bodhisattva vehicle abide?" etc. Such an example has occurred before, but it was spoken in the context of the path of accumulation and the ground of application. Here, it is about one who has attained the path of seeing.

He said this with the intention of being close to it and doing so from the time of obtaining it, and the meaning is as previously stated. It is concluded that none of the dharmas that enter the Bodhisattva Vehicle are truly established. Furthermore, if the Blessed One asked Subhuti, 'What dharma did I actually obtain from the Buddha Dipamkara in the past, and what do you think are the dharmas of enlightenment?' Subhuti replied, 'There are none.' The Blessed One affirmed the words and the meaning with 'It is so, it is so,' that there is no such dharma. If there were some such dharma, the Tathagata Dipamkara would not have prophesied to me, the Brahmin boy, 'You will become a Buddha Shakyamuni at some time in the future.' Because no perfectly enlightened dharma is truly established. At that time, the Tathagata Dipamkara prophesied my enlightenment. Moreover, the dharmas that are prophesied by whom, what, and where are merely nominal designations, just names, and as previously stated, there is no reason for them to be truly established. The sutras say that one immeasurable and ninety-one kalpas have passed since the appearance of the Buddha Dipamkara. In the commentary on the Guhyasamaja Tantra, the Lamp Illuminating, it is also said that Dipamkara appeared one immeasurable and ninety-one great kalpas ago. At that time, when the teacher, the Brahmin boy, became a cloud of dharma, the Buddha himself stepped on his body and blessed him to obtain the great forbearance of non-arising dharma and prophesied that he would attain enlightenment. In general, there are three types of forbearance of non-arising dharma: small, medium, and large. The small one is the forbearance of the path of application, the medium one is the path of seeing, and the large one arises from obtaining the Arhatship. According to the Mahayana, it is obtained from the eighth bhumi. To obtain any of these three forbearances, one must realize that conditioned dharmas do not arise by their own nature, so one must realize emptiness. For the medium and large ones, one must directly realize emptiness. For the large one, one must abandon afflictions.
