How so? Without seeking, yet claiming to be wise. If that one is also wise, otherwise a dull-witted person. Such an unsurpassable path, extremely difficult to encounter, to abandon it, how strange! Thus it is said. These treatises explain that one must enter the Mantra path, and they prevent the wrong paths or unfavorable aspects of entering the Mantra path. Although there are many obstacles of unfavorable aspects, here, ancient teachers, with the intention of seeking the Dharma, entered the field of valid cognition, and, being content with just that, those who abandon the Mantra path are prevented. Generally, it is best to understand the Mantra path on the basis of understanding the reasoning of Madhyamaka and Pramana. However, considering that some people, although entering the reasoning of Madhyamaka and Pramana, are dominated by wrong views. Therefore, in the "Garland of Precious Sayings," it says: "Although well-studied in these two systems, Like going east and then going west, Like a preta craving the moonlight, By the power of wrong views based on reasoning, Causing the eyes of wisdom to be repeatedly obscured, This life and future lives' gatherings of virtue, For a long time, turn away from right view, Accumulating very strong causes." Thus it is said, it is crucial not to act in that way. The third is from the common path to "one should strive." To enter the secret Mantra path, one must tame the mind with the common path, and this is not just one aspect of the common path, but one must tame the mind with the path common to the small, medium, and great individuals. In particular, one should generate a pure view of renunciation, Bodhicitta, and selflessness. For this view, one should also strive as much as possible to rely on the view of the noble Nagarjuna and his son, as prophesied by the Bhagavan in many Sutras and Tantras. After practicing the common path, generally, the door to enter the Mantra is empowerment. Although it is not necessarily apparent just from this door, the real door to enter the Mantra path is the Bodhicitta related to empowerment. As it says in the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path: The Victorious One taught two Great Vehicles, the Paramita Great Vehicle and the Secret Mantra Great Vehicle, and there is no other Great Vehicle besides these two. These two

Whichever door one enters, the entrance is the mind of enlightenment. It is said in the scriptures that one must generate the mind of enlightenment to enter the path of mantra, and I think that is also the meaning. Otherwise, it would be unacceptable to become a Bodhisattva simply by entering mantra. The differences between the three types of individuals and their paths are explained in detail in the Lamrim and other texts. Here, to give just a glimpse, Jowo's Lamp for the Path of Awakening says: Know that there are three types of individuals: small, medium, and supreme. To clearly explain their characteristics, I will describe their distinctions separately. Those who, by whatever means, seek only the pleasures of samsara for their own benefit are known as the lowest individuals. Turning their backs on the pleasures of existence and abstaining from sinful deeds, those who seek only their own peace are called intermediate individuals. Those who, because of the suffering of their own minds, desire to completely eliminate all the suffering of others are the supreme individuals. As it is said. To summarize its meaning, the Sanskrit word for individual, purusha, means one who is capable. Here, the three types of individuals are not merely striving for this life, but are striving for and capable of achieving either higher realms or definite goodness in future lives, and so they are called individuals. The actual small individual mentioned here is not merely seeking the happiness of this life, but is mainly seeking the happiness of higher realms in future lives. The actual path of the small individual is to take refuge in the Three Jewels, desiring to be liberated from the lower realms, and to abandon non-virtuous actions that are the cause of lower realms, and to strive mainly to perform virtuous actions for that purpose alone. This requires someone who is not seeking liberation. The actual intermediate individual is not only seeking liberation from the lower realms, but also desires liberation from the general suffering of samsara, and is a shravaka or pratyekabuddha who seeks liberation. Their actual path is the thought of renunciation, the Four Noble Truths, and contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination in forward and reverse order. The great individual is a Mahayana lineage person who mainly seeks to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of others.
