The necessity of learning the union of skillful means and wisdom. Explaining the actual path of union. First: If separated from the practice of Prajñāpāramitā, obscurations will not be exhausted. Therefore, in order to abandon all afflictive and cognitive obscurations, one should always meditate on the yoga of Prajñāpāramitā, endowed with skillful means. Thus it is said. One should cultivate insight based on calm abiding, because mere calm abiding, separated from the union of the Prajñāpāramitā of realizing suchness, that is, yoga, will not exhaust obscurations. Therefore, in order to abandon all afflictive and cognitive obscurations, one should always cultivate the Prajñāpāramitā of realizing emptiness, together with skillful means such as generosity and discipline. Second, the reason for learning the union is: Wisdom without skillful means, and skillful means without wisdom, are both said to be bonds. Therefore, neither should be abandoned. Thus it is said. In order to accomplish the deeds of the Buddhas, neither skillful means nor wisdom should be abandoned. Why? Because the Bhagavan said in the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra: Wisdom without skillful means is a bond, and skillful means without wisdom is a bond. Therefore, they should not be abandoned. Third, the path of union has two aspects: brief explanation and extensive explanation. First: In order to dispel doubts about what is wisdom and what is skillful means, one should clearly distinguish the true differences between skillful means and wisdom. Thus it is said. One should clearly distinguish. Wherever the nature of skillful means and wisdom seems to be mixed, one should truly and well distinguish them, without mixing them. What is the necessity? In order to dispel misunderstanding, wrong views, and doubts about what is wisdom and what is skillful means. Second, the extensive explanation has three parts: identifying skillful means, the necessity of familiarizing oneself with them, and identifying wisdom. First: Abandoning Prajñāpāramitā, the perfections of generosity, etc., have been taught by the Victorious Ones as skillful means. Thus it is said. What is skillful means? It is abandoning Prajñāpāramitā, that is, separating from it, and being embraced by the mind of enlightenment.

Generosity, and the remaining five perfections such as discipline and patience, and other virtuous dharmas, are all taught by the Buddhas as skillful means. Second: Through the power of familiarizing with skillful means, one meditates on any wisdom, thereby quickly attaining enlightenment, not just meditating on selflessness alone. Thus it is said. One needs to learn the combination of skillful means and wisdom. Through the power of familiarizing and stabilizing skillful means such as impermanence, thinking about karma and its results, and generosity, the Bodhisattva himself meditates on any wisdom that destroys the object of conceptual grasping, thereby quickly attaining perfect enlightenment, not just meditating on the meaning of selflessness alone. Because with skillful means and wisdom separated, even the first ground cannot be attained. Third is identifying wisdom: aggregates, elements, and sources, realizing the unborn, the knowledge of emptiness of self-nature, is fully explained as wisdom. Thus it is said. The object of wisdom is all dharmas included in the five aggregates such as form, the eighteen elements such as the eye, and the twelve sources such as the eye source. What needs to be ascertained on top of these is that they are unborn by nature. The wisdom that knows the emptiness of self-nature upon realizing this, here, among the two, skillful means and wisdom, is called wisdom, because it is the main part of all wisdom training. Second, how to train in higher vision is divided into two parts: detailed explanation and conclusion. The first part has three sections: relying on the assembly of higher vision, the way to meditate on higher vision, and the result of meditation. The first part has two sections: generating wisdom arising from thought based on reasoning, and generating wisdom arising from hearing based on scripture. The first part has three sections: analyzing the result with existence or non-existence, arising or ceasing; analyzing the cause with diamond slivers; and analyzing the essence with the reasoning of being free from one or many. First, existence is not reasonable to arise, non-existence is like a lotus in the sky. Since both have faults, neither arises from both. Thus it is said. The proponents of reality say that things do not arise by their own nature.
