An Explanation of the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: A Brief and Clear Exposition, Clouds of Offerings Pleasing to the Great Lord. An Explanation of the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: A Brief and Clear Exposition, Clouds of Offerings Pleasing to the Great Lord. The name of the work is: An Explanation of the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: A Brief and Clear Exposition, Clouds of Offerings Pleasing to the Great Lord. Namo Shakyamuniye! Lord of the Blissful Realm, Protector Amitabha, Before the beings of the degenerate age, as a great scholar in the noble land, Manifesting excellently as the glorious Marme Dzepa, I prostrate to the feet of the one widely renowned! That Protector, having come to the central region of Tibet, Opened the tradition of the general Buddhist teachings and the Kadampa, With excellent explanations as the main focus, Known as the "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment." From Dromtonpa, Potowa, Langri Tangpa, and The second Victor, father and sons, and others, All based themselves on this very Lamp for the Path, And propagated the Kadampa teachings. Therefore, here too, of the Lamp for the Path, A brief and clear explanation of the words, For the sake of pleasing the Great Lord with offerings, I shall write it with faith alone. The extensive biography of the greatness of Lord Atisha is clearly found in the Kadampa Dharma History and others. The condensed biography is as it appears in the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path and others. Although it would be appropriate to explain it here, I have refrained from doing so for fear of prolixity. This Lamp for the Path summarizes the meaning of all the scriptures into the order of practice, and therefore, it is particularly excellent from the point of view of what is expressed. To explain this, there are four parts: the meaning of the title, the homage of the translation, the meaning of the text, and the meaning of the conclusion. The first is: In the Indian language: बोधिपथप्रदीप (bodhipathapradīpa). In the Tibetan language: བྱང་ཆུབ་ལམ་གྱི་སྒྲོན་མ་ (byang chub lam gyi sgron ma), which means Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. Among these, बोधि (bodhi) is བྱང་ཆུབ (byang chub, enlightenment), पथ (patha) is ལམ (lam, path), and प्रदीप (pradīpa) is སྒྲོན་མ་ (sgron ma, lamp). Explanation of the title: This treatise is called the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment because it clearly shows and makes visible, like a lamp, the stages of the path that lead to the enlightenment of the Buddha (सर्वज्ञता, sarvajñatā, all-knowing). The second part is the homage of the translation: Homage to the Bodhisattva Manjushri, who has become a youth. This was composed by the translator and is easy to understand. The third part is the meaning of the text, which has three parts: praising and vowing to explain, explaining the actual text, and on what basis it was composed.

Firstly, having paid homage with great reverence to the Buddhas of the three times and their Dharma, and to the Sangha, I shall illuminate the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, having been urged by the good disciple Jangchub Ö (Bodhiprabha, Sanskrit: Bodhiprabha, Romanized Sanskrit: bodhiprabha, Literal meaning: Bodhi Light). So it is said. At the beginning of composing this treatise, to whom is homage paid? It is to the Buddhas of the past, future, and present three times, and to the sacred Dharma of the scriptures and realization of those Buddhas, and to the Sangha who practice that Dharma, with great reverence. Having paid homage in this way, what action is taken? Relying on the urging of the good disciple Lha Lama Jangchub Ö (Bodhiprabha, Sanskrit: Bodhiprabha, Romanized Sanskrit: bodhiprabha, Literal meaning: Bodhi Light), in order to clarify this treatise, the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, which is its essence, will be explained. Just as a lamp illuminates objects, it means to make it clear. Lha Lama Jangchub Ö (Bodhiprabha, Sanskrit: Bodhiprabha, Romanized Sanskrit: bodhiprabha, Literal meaning: Bodhi Light) was a royal prince of Tibet, who sent Gya Tson Seng and Naktsö Lotsawa and others to India, saying, "Please invite a Pandit who can benefit Tibet." When they went to India and asked for predictions from some great accomplished ones with clairvoyance, it was prophesied that Jowo (Atisha) would bring great benefit. Thus, when Jowo was nearly sixty years old, he was invited to Tibet and, while residing in Upper Ngari, Lha Lama asked Jowo seven questions, and it is said that this treatise was composed in response to those seven questions. Jowo himself wrote a concise commentary on this, and others such as Geshe Tonpa, Putowa, Sharawa, and Naktsö also wrote commentaries and various pith instructions and summaries. Later, the previous Panchen Lama also wrote a more detailed commentary. Secondly, the actual explanation of the text is divided into two parts: a brief explanation of the nature of the three types of individuals, and a separate explanation of the characteristics of the paths of those three. The first part is: Through the small, medium, and great, one should know that there are three types of individuals. In order to clearly explain their nature, their differences will be described separately. So it is said. The order of the paths and the order of the faculties have three differences: small, medium, and great. Therefore, one should know that there are three types of individuals and the nature of their paths. In order to clearly explain what the differences or characteristics of each are, they will be described with clear words.
