through the method of rituals, etc. The extensive ritual for taking refuge vows is according to the refuge ritual of Jowo, and as it appears in the commentary on the chapter on bodhisattva morality composed by Je himself, but because there is much content here, it is not recorded. Second, the ritual without a guru is: Therefore, strive for such, if a guru is not found, then from that other, receiving vows, the ritual will be truly explained. This is to say, the vow to explain the ritual of taking vows without a guru: Striving for easy taking of vows, if a guru like the one mentioned above is not found, then, apart from having a guru, especially in the absence of a guru, the ritual of taking vows oneself, as stated in the scriptures, will be truly explained here. Then, from which scripture is the ritual of taking vows without a guru explained? To that, in the past, Manjushri, the wheel-turning king named Ambaraja, how he generated the mind of enlightenment, the Buddha land of Manjushri, as stated in the Ornament Sutra, likewise, it will be clearly written here. Therefore, the ritual of taking vows without a guru will be explained: In the past, many eons ago, Manjushri, namely Manjughosha, the wheel-turning king named Ambaraja, he, in the presence of the Buddha Dragon Sound King, how he generated the mind of enlightenment, just as it is stated in the scripture of the adornment of the Buddha land of Manjushri, likewise, it will be clearly written here. The generation of the mind and the way of taking vows that appear in the sutra are: In the presence of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, generating the perfect mind of enlightenment, considering all beings as guests, liberating them from samsara, the mind of hatred and anger, stinginess and jealousy, from now until the attainment of enlightenment, will not be done. Brahmacharya should be practiced, sins and desires should be abandoned. Rejoicing in the vows of morality, one should follow the Buddha in learning. Not in a quick way, hoping to attain enlightenment, for the sake of one sentient being, one will abide at the end of the future. Immeasurable, inconceivable Buddha lands will be purified.

Having done these, completely abide in the ten directions. My actions of body and speech, all must be purified. The actions of mind must also be purified, do not do any non-virtuous actions. Thus it is said. Here there are two ways: generating Bodhicitta and taking vows. The first is: In front of the Protector Buddhas, generate the Bodhicitta for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. The necessity is: to entertain all sentient beings, it is for their sake. The object of entertaining is: to liberate those beings from Samsara, to place them in Nirvana and to entertain them. The second has three parts, the first is to promise the discipline of vows: From the day of taking vows, until the attainment of great Bodhi, do not have harmful thoughts such as wanting to kill sentient beings, as well as the mind of anger, and stinginess of holding onto possessions, and jealousy of not being able to bear the prosperity of others, etc. Abandon sexual intercourse of the union of the two organs, practice celibacy, abandon sinful actions and their cause, attachment to objects of desire. Because of rejoicing in the discipline of abandoning these, one should learn the conduct of the Buddhas. The second is to promise the discipline of benefiting sentient beings: One does not wish to attain Bodhi in a quick and urgent manner, but for the sake of benefiting one sentient being, one must also dwell in the endless future Samsara. The third is the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharmas: One must purify the faults of one's own Buddha-field, which has immeasurable and inconceivable qualities, and in order to benefit the sentient beings who hear and remember my name, and see, hear, remember, and touch, therefore, in the ten directions, my name is widely spread and remembered and abided by, and one must also purify the world of sentient beings. In short, my actions of body and speech must be purified from sins in every way, and not only that, but the actions of mind must also be purified from downfalls, the non-virtuous actions of the three doors must never be done until Bodhi. The ritual for taking vows mentioned here has two types: elaborate and concise.
