The differences in its causes, objects, essence, what to learn, and benefits should be understood from the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path, etc. Third, training the mind in the three minds: Then, for all sentient beings, with the mind of loving-kindness as a guide, observe the sufferings of the three lower realms and birth, etc., and the sufferings of death and transference, etc. For all beings, suffering with suffering, from the cause of suffering, wishing beings to be liberated, etc. The first two of these are loving-kindness, then three are the objects of compassion, then three show the aspects of compassion, and also implicitly show the way to train the mind of enlightenment. After taking special refuge, what is there to do? Because for all sentient beings, one should cultivate the mind of loving-kindness that is pleasing and wishes to have happiness. After cultivating pleasing loving-kindness by knowing all sentient beings as mothers, remembering their kindness, and repaying their kindness, what is there to do? Because then one should cultivate great compassion with the mind of loving-kindness as a guide. How to cultivate? One should know the general suffering of all sentient beings and the suffering of the three lower realms, and the suffering of human birth, old age, sickness, and death, etc., and the suffering of the desire gods falling under death and transference, etc. One should know the ways of the suffering of formation of the upper realms, and observe all the beings of the three realms. Among them, the three lower realms suffer with suffering, the desire gods and humans suffer from the suffering of change, the upper realms suffer from the suffering of formation, and the reason is that beings tormented by the afflictions of the cause, the truth of origin, wish to be liberated from that. After cultivating great compassion, because one should generate the mind of enlightenment guided by that compassion. Those treatises show that to generate the mind of enlightenment, loving-kindness and compassion are necessary. Second, the main part is: Without turning back, vowing to generate the mind of enlightenment. This means, what to generate? As before, after well cultivating the objects and aspects of loving-kindness and compassion, for the benefit of all sentient beings, the wish to attain Buddhahood.

One should generate the mind of enlightenment. How to generate it? By vowing never to turn back from generating the mind of enlightenment at any time. Generally, the aspiration bodhicitta can arise without relying on rituals, but if obtained through rituals, it has special necessities such as stability, so it is necessary to accept the ritual. The actual method of accepting the ritual, as described in the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, etc., I have already compiled separately, so I will not repeat it here. Third, regarding the five trainings including the practice bodhicitta, the first is the benefit: What is the merit of generating such an aspiration mind? It is well explained by Maitreya in the Sutra of the Jewel Garland. As said before, what is the great merit or benefit of generating such an aspiration mind, that is, through the ritual? In the Sutra of the Jewel Garland, the venerable Maitreya extensively explained it to the bodhisattva Norzang. The way of explanation is as the sutra itself says: Son of good family, the mind of enlightenment is like the seed of all the Buddha's teachings. And so on. Although there are many sutras that explain the benefits of generating the mind of enlightenment, none is more extensive than this. Second, the training to cultivate the mind of enlightenment: One should read the scriptures or listen to them from the lama, and understand the infinite merits of the perfect mind of enlightenment. For the reason that it abides, one should generate this mind again and again. As it is said. The person who has accepted the ritual of aspiration bodhicitta, in order to understand the benefits of generating the aspiration bodhicitta, should read the sutras such as the Jewel Garland and special treatises by himself, or listen to them well from the lama, so as to understand that the merits or benefits of generating the perfect mind of enlightenment are infinite. In order for this mind to abide in one's own continuum and not be lost, that is, for this reason, one should remember and generate this aspiration bodhicitta again and again, or three times a day and three times a night. If one cannot complete the extensive ritual of generating aspiration bodhicitta as described in the Stages of the Path, then one should do it with the four fundamental things (i.e., the four powers of repentance), which is the teaching of Atisha. So, what is the infinite merit or benefit of generating the perfect mind of enlightenment? Not only in the Jewel Garland, but also in other scriptures, such as the Sutra Requested by Brave Giving, etc.

Furthermore, whatever merit is described in this, when about three verses, it should be written in brief. The merit of the Bodhi mind, if it had a form, would fill the entire space of the sky, and it would be even greater than that. As many Buddha lands as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, if someone fills them with precious things and offers them to the protectors of the world, it is superior to someone who joins their palms and directs their mind towards Bodhi. That offering is particularly excellent, and there is no end to it. Having said that, to summarize the meaning, in the Sutra Requested by Brave Giving, whatever merit is described in this generation of the mind, at the time of about three verses, it is vowed to be written here in brief. From then on, the benefits are shown. Whatever the merit of generating the mind for Bodhi is, although it does not have a form, if it had a form, it would fill the entire space of the sky, and the benefit would be even greater than that because it cannot be contained. For example, as many Buddha lands as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, if someone fills them with wish-fulfilling jewels and silver, etc., and offers them to the Buddhas, the protectors of the world, it is particularly superior to someone who joins their palms and directs their body towards Bodhi. If you ask, how is generating the mind for Bodhi described as an offering here? There are two types of offerings: external material offerings and internal practice offerings. Among them, generating the mind for Bodhi and practicing loving-kindness, compassion, and emptiness are internal practice offerings. It should be understood that this is the intention. Third, learning to accumulate the two accumulations: Having generated the mind of aspiration for Bodhi, one should diligently increase it in every way. So it is. As before, having generated the mind of aspiration for Bodhi through the door of remembering the benefits, etc., it is necessary to diligently increase this mind in every way through the door of the seven branches, etc. If the mind of Bodhi increases upwards, then the two accumulations increase upwards, so one quickly becomes a Buddha. Fourth, one who does not abandon sentient beings in mind is also upright in other lives.
