In short, any action that becomes a deed is established in dependence on the agent. The agent is also named through the actions he or she has done, such as this or that deed. One cannot be established without depending on the other. Therefore, all actions and agents are explained as being empty of inherent existence, and it concludes: The agent depends on the action, and the action also arises in dependence on the agent itself. Apart from that, no cause for accomplishment is seen. This should be understood as such. In the ninth chapter, when examining what exists before, such as seeing and hearing, and the feelings themselves, what object exists before? By what is it to be designated? etc. Although it is explained that before seeing and hearing etc., there are no seers and hearers etc., and before the seers etc., there are no acts of seeing etc., nevertheless, when the seers etc. exist, there is seeing etc., so the acts of seeing etc. also exist nominally, because they are established in mutual dependence. Although it is explained that seeing, the seer, and the act of seeing etc. do not exist, nevertheless, when the seers etc. exist, there is seeing etc., so the acts of seeing etc. also exist nominally, because they are established in mutual dependence, seeing, the seer, and the act of seeing etc. are explained as being empty of inherent existence. Furthermore, here, other schools must inevitably accept that there is a person who sees etc. However, they see that the aggregates and the essence cannot be the same, so they want to accept a self of a person that is different in essence from the aggregates. Other schools of our own tradition see that it is necessary to establish only a person who accumulates karma etc., and seeing the harm in believing that there is a self that is different in essence from the aggregates, they say that the alaya-consciousness, which is the continuum of aggregates and takes on and abandons bodies, is the self or person. Our own system is that the object of focus of the co-emergent clinging to self must be established as the I and the person. And, in worldly conventions, things like 'my form' and 'my mind' are held to be like the lord of the aggregates and the aggregates are held to be like his servants. And, in the world, it is thought that it is bad when my limbs etc. are sick, but there is no clinging to the limbs etc. as the self, because when the hand is sick and recovers, it is established that I am sick and recover, but the hand is not established as the self.

Therefore, one does not cling to the hand as "I." For the Sthavira, the self that is the object of clinging to "I," without distinguishing the self of previous and later times, is merely the "I" that has existed since beginningless time. And the selves of the various beings when they take bodies such as gods are each a distinction of the former. The self that Sthavira distinguishes in each birth, the self that is clung to as "I," is a part of the self of each lifetime. So it is said. Such a self or mere "I" is merely a designation, and it is not contradictory even if it is not established from its own side, because pots and so on are also like "I," and when the meaning of the designation is sought with reason, it is not found, but it can be established as nominally existent, because it is the same. In the Four Hundred, it says: "Your self is not my self, therefore it is not certain that it is not a self." And so on, later when explaining the meaning, it says that if the self exists by its own nature, then just as one person clings to it as "I," everyone must also cling to it, because the self from which your clinging to "I" arises, I do not have clinging to "I." It should be understood as it is said. In the tenth chapter, in the section on examining fire and firewood, the root verse says: "If firewood is fire, the agent and the action become one. If firewood is other than fire, then fire will arise without wood." And so on, it explains that fire and firewood are mutually dependent, firewood is designated as the cause of fire, and fire also arises dependent on firewood, so it is merely established as mutually dependent, therefore it is certain that it is not established by its own nature. Here it is explained that the firewood in this case is not necessarily just wood. Even if it is wood, if it cannot become the cause of its own fruit, fire, it cannot be firewood, otherwise it would be a fault that all earth and stones become firewood. Here, fire itself is not firewood, and fire is not other than firewood without dependence, fire does not possess the essence of firewood, fire does not depend on the essence of firewood, and firewood does not have the essence of fire, it explains the five ways of searching for a house, and then says that this should be applied to people and aggregates, pots and felt, and other things, it should be understood as it is said. In the eleventh chapter, in the section on examining the beginning and the end
