Homage to Mañjughoṣa! The Buddhas themselves have prophesied that they will explain the profound meaning as it is. Having paid homage to the venerable Nāgārjuna and Candrakīrti, I will briefly write down the essential points of the profound meaning. Here, I will briefly explain some of the points from the Tsongkhapa's commentary on the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way. First, in the first chapter, with \"not from self,\" etc., there is the vow to refute the four extremes of arising. In the context of examining conditions, it has already been explained in terms of words and meaning that the causes and conditions are established as being without inherent existence. Here, only the general meaning is explained. In the commentary, it is said that by meditating on the meaning of knowing the thusness, ignorance is abandoned. Therefore, the meaning of thusness changes into samsara and nirvana depending on whether one knows or does not know. If one does not recognize ignorance, one does not know how to abandon it, like shooting an arrow without seeing the target. Therefore, ignorance must be recognized. It is explained that the concept of grasping objects as inherently existent is ignorance. There are two types of ignorance: ignorance that is confused about the self of phenomena, which is to grasp at phenomena such as the eyes and ears, and to grasp at their own characteristics as being established by their own nature. Ignorance that is confused about the self of persons is to grasp at persons and to grasp at their own characteristics as being established by their own nature. As it is said. There is also ignorance that is confused about cause and effect, but here we are identifying ignorance that is confused about thusness. Its divisions are two: ignorance that grasps at any of its objects, phenomena or persons, as being true or real. Grasping at the self of a person also has two types: grasping at the \"I\" of one's own continuum and grasping at it as being inherently existent, thinking \"I\"; and grasping at the \"mine\" of one's own continuum and grasping at it as being inherently existent, thinking \"mine.\" Both are contaminated wisdom included in the view of the aggregates. Here, the \"self\" in \"selflessness\" is the self to be refuted." } ] ============================================================

Those such as being established by own-being, being established by own-essence, being independent, and being established by own-characteristic are all synonyms for the self to be refuted. Such a self, when negated on a person, is the selflessness of a person, and when negated on other phenomena, is the selflessness of phenomena. Although there is no difference of subtle or coarse in what is to be refuted, it is spoken of in that way due to the basis of distinction. As it says in the commentary on the Four Hundred: "That which is called 'self' is the nature of the essence of things that does not depend on others. The absence of that is selflessness. It is understood as two by the distinction of phenomena and persons, namely the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons." As it is said. The meaning of 'not depending' here is taken to be something that is established independently without relying on others, and that is what is to be refuted. Again, in that very text it says: "Therefore, from the extreme of existence without own-essence, and from establishing cause and effect of that which is without own-nature, liberation from all extremes of impotence. It seems that these two teachers are unique in explaining the intention of the noble ones, so it is very important to distinguish between the two existences and the two non-existences." The two existences, existence by own-characteristic and existence that is not merely posited by the power of convention, are the same. All that exists conventionally is said to exist by the power of convention. The way of positing by the power of convention is: "I have accumulated karma, I experience the result." When searching for how the basis upon which this convention is applied exists, it is neither each of the eyes, ears, etc., nor their collection. And if one searches for something other than those, there is no 'I', which is the way in which a person is empty of essence. Even so, if there is no 'I see' etc., it is established that there is harm from the valid cognition of convention. If a thing does not exist by its own essence, then it is established as existing by the power of convention. Again, when explaining the meaning of exclusion and complete determination, in that very text it says: "If one contradictory is excluded, the other is completely determined, and if one is negated, the other must be established, there is no difference between the Madhyamaka Prasangika and Svatantrika schools. When existence by nature is excluded by valid cognition, the object of negation that is excluded is necessarily determined by valid cognition, therefore it is completely determined." And, although the wisdom of reasoning realizes the absence of own-nature, it does not realize the way in which it exists.
