Furthermore, since aggregates do not exist substantially, they do not exist inherently. Since they do not exist, the result arising from them also does not arise inherently, it is said. The root verse states: Whatever is the collection of causes and conditions, by that, I do not arise by myself, how can the result be produced? Therefore, the aggregates do nothing. As it is said. In the twenty-first chapter, examining arising and ceasing. The root verse states: If destruction does not arise, etc., thus refuting that arising and ceasing exist inherently. Here, arising is said to be birth, and ceasing is said to be either in the process of ceasing or already ceased. Although the arising and abiding of one thing contradict what has already ceased or been destroyed, generally, arising, ceasing, and abiding do not contradict each other. For example, a vase, although it does not arise again, it is merely arising; although it is not destroyed, it is in the process of ceasing and decaying, therefore it is ceasing, because ceasing is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. If considered from the perspective of sequence, a conditioned phenomenon first arises, then abides in the middle, and finally ceases, this is how it is named, and at that time, ceasing often refers to destruction. From this perspective, arising, ceasing, and abiding occur sequentially, therefore they should be distinguished. Both the root text and the commentary state that arising and ceasing cannot exist simultaneously or at the same time inherently, this refers to such a situation. The situation where birth and death cannot exist at the same time is also similar. Arising and ceasing exist nominally, but not inherently, because arising, i.e., birth, depends on ceasing, and ceasing also depends on arising or birth, because if there is no arising, there is no ceasing, and the terms arising and birth are not used for things that cannot cease. If one wonders, what are the causes of the peacock's feathers, the sharpness of thorns, and the roundness of lentils, etc.? This is due to the distinct differences determined by the unique karma of that sentient being and the power of its own causes. If one thinks that sound, lamps, and lightning disappear in an instant, therefore they have no cause, they also have a cause. As the Clear Words states: The destruction of these things is also conditioned by arising, therefore it has a cause. As it is said. In the twenty-second chapter, examining the Thus-Gone One.

The Tathagata is not the aggregates. Summarizing the meaning of etc., the result is that the Tathagata is also not established by nature, because he is merely designated in dependence on his five aggregates. Thus, the Tathagata is not one that is established by his own five aggregates and his own nature. If it were, then as stated in the tenth chapter, the agent and all that is to be done would become one, and as stated in the eighteenth chapter, it would become subject to arising and ceasing. The Tathagata is also not different in essence from his own aggregates, because without relying on the aggregates, a Tathagata cannot be established separately. For this reason, the Tathagata does not inherently exist in relation to the aggregates, nor do the aggregates inherently exist in relation to the Tathagata. Just as Devadatta has black (color) and has ears, etc., the Tathagata's own essence is neither different nor one. Summarizing its meaning is: Thus, since there is no self-nature in five ways, what is the Tathagata established by his own self-nature? It does not exist. It is said like this. The root verse also says: If the Buddha depends on the aggregates, then it is not self-existent. What is not self-existent? How can it exist from other things? It is said like this. The Diamond Sutra says: Those who see me in form. Etc., because the Tathagata is established in dependence on his own five aggregates and is not established by nature, those who are attached to the form and sound of the Tathagata as real, and who are bound by the attachment to reality, cannot see the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata's Dharma nature, it is said like this. In the twenty-third chapter, in the section on examining perversions, it says: Attachment, hatred, and ignorance, are said to arise from discrimination. Etc., the afflictions represented by the three poisons arise from improper discrimination and are temporary. Therefore, it is explained that they do not exist by nature. What do the three poisons depend on to arise? Attachment depends on a lovely object, hatred depends on an unlovely object, and ignorance depends on an intermediate object, arising like a painting. Therefore, there is no self-nature, and lovely and unlovely objects, etc., are also established in relation to each other, so there is no self-nature.
