In the nineteenth chapter, which examines time, the root verse states, "The present, the past, and the future," etc., indicating that if time is established by its own nature, then all three times—past, present, and future—must be established simultaneously. However, outsiders believe that time ripens what arises, time gathers beings, time awakens those who sleep, and it is extremely difficult to transcend time. They believe that there exists a permanent time with these characteristics, and they acknowledge that it has different measures such as moments, instants, short periods, days and nights, months, and years. Buddhists, on the other hand, believe that time, as a general concept, exists in all past and future instances, but they do not consider it to be permanent. For example, we acknowledge that a pot, as a general concept, exists in all past and future instances, but we do not necessarily consider it to be permanent. Therefore, other schools within our own tradition state that although there is no such permanent time as conceived by outsiders, there is a time that is established by its own nature, based on moments, etc. However, the Prasangikas assert that time is merely a nominal designation, a mere imputation based on moments, etc. This school's method of establishing the three times is as follows: Taking a sprout as an example, the sprout is the present, the destruction of the sprout is the past, and the non-arising of the sprout, even though there is a cause for arising in general, is the future because the conditions are not complete at that time. This is as it is said. In the twentieth chapter, which examines aggregates, the root verse states, "If the aggregation of causes and conditions itself can produce, and if the result exists in the aggregation," etc., refuting the self-arising of the result from the aggregation of causes and conditions. The outsiders believe that just as something that exists generally arises and something that does not exist does not arise, a result that exists at the time of the cause will arise, and a result that does not exist will not arise. The Vaibhashikas within our own tradition also believe that some results exist at the time of their own causes, and the nature of some dharmas exists at the time of their own causes. In response to this, it is pointed out here that a result that is already established does not need to arise again, and if it needs to arise again, it would lead to the fault of infinite arising. Furthermore, because the result is not seen to exist in the aggregation of causes and conditions, it is argued that something that exists in it will not arise, thus proving that the result is newly produced from a state of non-existence. The result arises from the aggregation of causes and conditions.
