How does that become? Just as the Teacher says, "I have taught the Dharma to you," this arises from the conceptual thoughts of those beings who are afflicted by the sleep of ignorance and are dreaming. From here, as it is said in the sutra, the Dharma taught for the sake of Nirvana exists only on the level of nominal consciousness, but for those who understand the truth, it does not exist. Just as it is said in the Akashagarbha Sutra, even without the effort of speech, the sound of teaching the Dharma will arise from the sky, and it should be understood that this is explained with a clear example. In the Diamond Sutra, the Teacher says, "The Dharma that I obtained from Dipamkara Buddha is nothing," which is similar to the meaning of not actually obtaining it. In the twenty-sixth chapter, when examining the twelve links of dependent origination, the root verse says, "Because of ignorance obscuration, rebirth also occurs." etc., using the twelve links of dependent origination, it explains both the way of wandering in samsara and the way of liberation from it. If we summarize the way of wandering, it explains the cause and effect that propels samsara, and the cause and effect that accomplishes samsara. The cause that propels samsara is ignorance and action. How does it propel? It is in the way that the consciousness of the causal stage is imbued with the habits of karma. What is propelled? It is name and form, the six sense bases, contact, feeling, and also the consciousness of the resultant stage. The cause that accomplishes samsara is craving and grasping. How does it accomplish? It is in the way that the habits of karma that imbue the consciousness become powerful. What is accomplished? It is birth and old age and death, which is only an example. The way to be liberated from samsara is: "The root of samsara is actions." etc., as it is said in the sutra, if one realizes and cultivates non-self, one will be liberated from it. In the twenty-seventh chapter, when examining views, the root verse says, "Whatever arises in previous lives, that is not this." That is to say, the self that arose in the previous life is not the self of this life. If it were, it would lead to the self being permanent, and it would lead to the fault that all six types of beings have a common basis, and so on. The sutra says, "At that time, in that era, I became a Chakravartin king who was honored by many," which means that the selves of previous and future lives are separate.

Generally speaking, and the "I"s of past and future lives are the same continuum, and there is no contradiction in saying this, considering this point. It is necessary to distinguish between the general and the particular "I". It is necessary to understand the reasons stated in the eleventh chapter. Furthermore, in the root text: "Apart from what is closely taken, What is your 'I'? Apart from what is closely taken, When it is said 'I' does not exist, If what is closely taken is 'I', Then your 'I' does not exist." This statement indicates that the word "I" is merely imputed in dependence on one's own aggregates, and apart from the aggregates, it is impossible to grasp an "I" that is different in nature from the aggregates. If one considers the "I" and the aggregates to be one, that is unreasonable. For when one thinks "I am," the mind perceives the "I" and the aggregates as different, and does not perceive them as one. In short, when a person remembers past lives, he remembers the general "I," not the individual "I"s. Moreover, when today's person remembers yesterday, the previous month, and the previous year, saying "I did this and that," he distinguishes the individual "I," and remembers the general "I." Because the general "I" existed at that time in the past years, months, days, and hours, while today's "I" did not exist at that time in the past years, months, days, and hours. If it existed, then the "I" would become permanent, and the states of old age and youth would become one, and it would be necessary to assume that the common basis of all beings also exists, which no one desires. Similarly, it is the same for future years, months, days, and hours. It is necessary to understand in this way. If one does not understand, many wrong views that rely on the extremes of past and future will arise. If one understands, all those wrong views will be reversed, and one will gain the correct view, thereby being liberated from all the bonds of samsara. As it is said in the scriptures, in the commentary on this point: Afterwards, just as it was previously well refuted by reason, if one realizes that the dependent arising of persons and phenomena has a nature that is established by its own characteristics, then no wrong view fabricated by one's own or another's school, relying on the past extreme, etc., can lead one astray. And if one meditates on the meaning of selflessness, which summarizes the meaning of how the true meaning is ascertained, then one will be liberated from samsara.
