And it is also reasonable to remember the arising of the thought, "It has become like that." I have spoken about it a little earlier, and it has already been spoken about elsewhere, so I will not elaborate. If the general and specific self are not distinguished, the faults mentioned here will arise. If they are well distinguished, those faults will not occur. Furthermore, if one thinks that the self of the previous life becomes the self of this life, that is unreasonable. Because if that were the case, the two aggregates in those two instances would also become one, which is unreasonable. Because the two aggregates of appropriation in the previous and subsequent lives have different causes and times. Apart from the aggregates of appropriation, that is, what is your self that is different in essence from it? There is none. When it is said, "Apart from the aggregates of appropriation, the self does not exist in its own essence," if one thinks that the aggregates of appropriation themselves are the self, then your promise of an essentially existent self is meaningless. Because it has become merely a name for the aggregates, it is meaningless to consider the self as separate. Moreover, the aggregates of appropriation themselves are not of the same nature as the self. If they were, then just as those aggregates arise and perish in each moment, if the self were also to become like that, that would also be unreasonable. Because you have already promised that the self is impermanent by nature, if you consider the self, which is established by nature, to be subject to arising and ceasing like the aggregates, then it would follow that the self is annihilated. If the self and the aggregates are both established by nature, then they are inseparable. If one says that it does not perish, that is also unreasonable. Because it would follow that the self is permanent. Furthermore, how can something to be appropriated become the self of the appropriator? That is not possible. Because it would follow that the action and the actor become one. If one thinks that the aggregates alone are not the self, but that there is a self that is distinct by nature from the aggregates of appropriation, that is also unreasonable. Because it is not reasonable for the self of the appropriator to exist separately from the aggregates of appropriation by its own nature. If those two were established as other by their own essence, then in the absence of the aggregates of appropriation, the self of the appropriator should be able to be grasped, but it is not able to be grasped.

Therefore, it is not different from taking. That is not the taking itself either. I am not without taking. It is also not certain that it does not exist. So it is said. Therefore, since I cannot be grasped without relying on the aggregates, I am not inherently different from taking. Since action and agent become one, that I am not the aggregates of taking itself. Since it would follow that there is no reason to posit self, I am not existing without relying on taking. However, it is also not certain that it does not exist, because it depends on the aggregates to be designated. It is also not designated like the son of a barren woman, because the basis of designation is not the same in terms of existence and non-existence in name. Secondly, saying that it did not arise in the past is also not reasonable. Whatever arose in previous lives, this is not different from that. If this is different, then it will also arise without that. Likewise, that also becomes different, and if it does not die there, it will be born. Severance and the exhaustion of actions, and the actions done by others, are experienced separately by others, and so on. It is not born from what has not arisen, and this becomes a fault. I would become something made, and birth would also become without cause. So it is said. Saying that in the time of past lives, I had never arisen before, that is also not reasonable, because the self that arose in previous lives, that is, in all times, is not inherently established in another continuum. If this self of this life becomes different in essence from the previous self, then it will arise without relying on that previous self. The previous self will also, like its own time, arise later and remain without ceasing, so it will be born in this life without dying in that previous life. If it arises like that at first, there are many faults. If that previous self is cut off, then the basis of karma and result will be cut off. If that is cut off, then there will be no experiencer, so the fruits of actions will be exhausted. If the later self wants to enjoy the fruits of the actions done by the previous self, that is also not reasonable. If it is inherently established, then the previous and later selves cannot be related, so they are inherently separate.
