That which is absent in all three times, how can it have a continuum? Thus it is said. If the destroyer who is in the process of ceasing and the producer who is in the process of arising are together at the same time, it is not reasonable. If it is not reasonable in other ways, then now, which skandha dwells where and the skandha that is about to die, how will birth naturally occur for those skandhas themselves? Because being in the process of arising is extremely contradictory to being in the process of ceasing. Thus, in the three times of ceased, not ceased, and ceasing, it is unreasonable for the continuum of existence, the first birth, to naturally exist. How can that which naturally exists in the three times naturally exist? Therefore, the continuum of existence does not naturally exist. The second is: the teachings of the Samadhiraja Sutra and others. The third is: the commentary on the twenty-first chapter called "Examining Arising and Ceasing." Fifth, showing that the continuum of existence is empty of inherent existence, divided into two: refuting that the Tathagata inherently exists, and refuting that afflictions inherently exist. The first division has three: explaining the text of the treatise, combining with scriptural authority, and indicating the title. The first division has four: refuting that the Tathagata is established by his own characteristics. Among them, showing that wrong views have no other basis. Showing the faults of holding wrong views. Applying this reasoning to others. The first division has three: refuting that the taker is established by inherent existence. Refuting that the object to be taken is established by inherent existence. Summarizing the meaning of both of these. The first division has three: refuting that the Tathagata exists as a substance. Refuting that what is imputed in dependence on the skandhas inherently exists. Summarizing the meaning of all of these. The first is: Not the skandhas, nor other than the skandhas, because there are no skandhas there, he is not there. The Tathagata is not one who possesses skandhas. What is the Tathagata? Thus it is said. If the Tathagata inherently exists, then is he the same nature as his own skandhas of form, etc., or different? If it is the former, then it is impossible for the Tathagata himself to be one in nature with his five skandhas, because if he is one, then he will become completely non-different from his five skandhas, the basis of imputation and the object of imputation will become one, and the agent and the action will beco

Because form etc. also become one. If it is like the latter, the Thus-gone One is not inherently different from his own aggregates. If so, the Thus-gone One would not have the five aggregates, and would not possess the characteristic of the aggregates being a collection, etc. These should be combined as explained in the eighteenth chapter. The Thus-gone One relying on the aggregates, and the aggregates relying on the Thus-gone One, are also not inherently existent, because the Thus-gone One and his own aggregates are not established as inherently different. The Thus-gone One possessing aggregates is also not inherently existent, because it is not inherently existent as a different entity like Devadatta possessing a cow, or as one entity like possessing ears. What is there that is established by its own nature as the Thus-gone One? There is nothing, because it cannot be found when searched for in five ways. Secondly, there are two: refuting that the Thus-gone One, imputed in dependence on the aggregates, exists inherently, and refuting that the Thus-gone One and the aggregates, the grasper and the grasped, exist inherently. First, the basis: if it is dependent on or imputed to the aggregates, it is not inherently existent, refuting the answer that these two are not contradictory. If the self is not established, then the other is not established. Therefore, it is established that the Thus-gone One is not inherently existent. First: If the Buddha relies on the aggregates, and does not exist inherently, then how can anything that does not exist inherently exist from another entity? This is what is said. The highly esteemed ones say that the Thus-gone One is not one that is not different from the aggregates, nor is it another that is different in entity, but it cannot be said to be the same or different from the aggregates, and it is also established in dependence on the aggregates. If the Buddha is established in dependence on the aggregates, then the Buddha, the subject, is not inherently existent, because it is imputed in dependence on his own aggregates, like an image. Whatever is not inherently existent, that is, not established by its own entity, then how can it have another real entity in dependence on the aggregates? Because if one's own entity is not established, it is contradictory to establish another's entity. Second: Whatever relies on another's real entity,
