If arising and ceasing exist by their own nature, does that mean their basis, things, also exist by their own nature? If you think so, that is unreasonable. Because things do not exist by their own nature, therefore arising and ceasing do not exist by their own nature. Because that has already been refuted. The existence of arising and ceasing by their own nature has also been refuted, so without that, things also do not exist by their own nature, because things are characterized by arising and ceasing. The third is: For emptiness, arising and ceasing are not reasonable. For non-emptiness, arising and ceasing are also not reasonable. Thus it is said. Furthermore, if arising and ceasing exist by their own nature, then what do they rely on, emptiness or non-emptiness? Emptiness, as the subject, that you have arising and ceasing, if they exist by their own nature, that is not reasonable. Because it is emptiness, like a flower in the sky. Non-emptiness by its own nature, as the subject, that you also have arising and ceasing, that is also not reasonable. Because it cannot serve as its basis. The third is: Arising and ceasing, being the same is not reasonable. Arising and ceasing, being different is also not reasonable. Thus it is said. Arising and ceasing, as the subject, being one in essence is not reasonable, because they are contradictory in time. Arising and ceasing, as the subject, existing as other in essence is also not reasonable, because the connection is established. The second part has two points: Seeing is not a proof, and showing its proof. The first point is: Arising and ceasing, do you think you see them? Arising and ceasing are seen through ignorance. Thus it is said. If the two, arising and ceasing, are established by their own nature, and are seen by the three types of people, superior, inferior, and intermediate, does that establish it? If you think that arising and ceasing are seen as established by their own nature, that is unreasonable. The way arising and ceasing appear to be established by their own nature is a reversed view. Because it is not seeing the true state of affairs. Like other illusions, mirages, cities of gandharvas, hairs seen by those with cataracts, fireflies, peacock feathers, and so on. Arising and ceasing are due to ignorance and delusion, and are defiled by it.

Because it appears that things are established by their own nature. The second (part) has two: refuting arising and ceasing from self and similar, dissimilar categories, and refuting arising from self and other. The first (part): Things do not arise from things, things do not arise from non-things, non-things do not arise from non-things, non-things do not arise from things. Thus it is said. So, how is it that the arising and ceasing of things appear to others to be established by their own nature, and how is this obscured by delusion? Through reasoning. Furthermore, for a while, the arising of things, that is, arising, does not arise from the previous similar category, because if it arises in that way, it would lead to faults such as cause and effect being simultaneous. A thing, that is, arising, does not arise from a non-thing, that is, ceasing, because if it ceases in a way that is established by its own nature, then arising would also not exist, and therefore it would become a slander of things. A non-thing, that is, ceasing, does not arise by its own nature from the ceasing of non-things, because the thing that is the cause of ceasing has disappeared, so it has no power to produce by its own nature. You consider ceasing to be a non-thing, and when it ceases, the thing that is the cause of ceasing disappears. The ceasing of non-things does not arise by its own nature from the arising of things, because if it arises in that way, then the unceased thing would produce a thing that is dissimilar to itself, just as a lamp produces darkness. The self-system considers that the ceasing and disappearing of things like a vase arise from the cause of the arising of the vase, etc., but if it is considered that arising and ceasing are established by their own nature, then disappearing is contradictory to things, and it must also disappear at the time of ceasing. Therefore, disappearing and ceasing become one, and in that case, just as it is thought that disappearing has no cause, ceasing also has faults such as having no cause. The second (part): Things do not arise from themselves, nor do they arise from others. Arising from self and other, if it exists, how does it arise? Thus it is said. So, how is it that things do not arise by their own nature? Thing-dharma, does not arise by its own nature, does not arise from itself, nor does it exist from others, nor does it arise from both self and other.
