Because it is not other, the subject is self and other-born entities. There is none, for if there were, how could birth occur, which would be unreasonable. Secondly, there are three points: If one asserts that things exist by their own nature, how it leads to permanence and annihilation. Refuting the response that avoids that fault. Summarizing the meaning of the refutation. The first is: If one accepts that things exist, then it becomes a view of permanence and annihilation, because that thing becomes permanent and impermanent. Thus it is said. Here, one should accept that things are without inherent existence. If it is not so, and one accepts that things exist by their own nature, then it becomes a view of permanence and annihilation. Why? Because if that thing is said to be permanent, it becomes a view of permanence, and if it is said to be impermanent, then it becomes a holder of the view of annihilation. The latter is established because if one asserts that it is impermanent while being inherently established, then the prior and subsequent moments of impermanence become disconnected, and in that way, it becomes a slander of destruction into non-existence. Secondly, there are two points: How to avoid permanence and annihilation after accepting inherent establishment, and its refutation. The first is: Although one accepts that things exist, it does not become annihilation or permanence, because the continuity of the arising of the fruit and the destruction of the cause is existence itself. Thus it is said. He says: Although one accepts that things exist, established by their own characteristics, it does not become a view of annihilation or permanence. Why? Because the arising of the fruit, that is, birth, and the destruction of the cause, that is, disintegration, both occur continuously, and that continuity is the very nature of existence, samsara. Thus, if one asserts that the fruit does not arise after the cause has ceased, it becomes annihilation, and if the cause remains without ceasing, it becomes permanence. But since it is not asserted in that way, there is no fault of becoming permanent or annihilated. Secondly, there are two points: Although one accepts continuity, one cannot eliminate permanence and annihilation, and the demonstration that continuity itself is inherently established. The first is: If the continuity of the arising and destruction of the fruit becomes existence, then since there is no birth in destruction, the continuity becomes the fault of annihilation. If things have inherent existence, then it is not reasonable for things to become non-existent. At the time of nirvana, there is annihilation, because the continuity of existence is completely pacified. Thus it is said. If, as you assert, the arising of the fruit and the cause

If the continuum of destruction is existence, then, since the single moment of the cause is destroyed, i.e., ceased, it is impossible to arise again, therefore, the continuum of the cause would become cut off. Because a continuum that is established by its own nature, once the former has ceased, it is unreasonable to arise again. Therefore, even if the result arises, it is of no benefit to the cutting off of the continuum of the cause. If one asserts that things are established by their own nature, then it would also become a view of permanence, because if things exist by their own essence, then it is unreasonable for things to later become non-existent, because there is no reversal in self-nature. Therefore, the view of permanence also remains in place. Furthermore, at the time of complete nirvana, since existence, i.e., the continuum of the aggregates, is cut off and naturally merges into complete peace, i.e., cessation, that is also unreasonable. Second: If the last ceases, then the first existence will not change its kind. If the last has not ceased, then the first existence will not change its kind. If the last is ceasing, then if the first birth changes, then one that is ceasing changes, and one that is arising also changes into another. So it is said. In this regard, consider from which of the following the first existence, the linking of rebirth, arises: the last existence at the time of the previous death that has ceased, has not ceased, or is ceasing. If it is said to be the first, then when the last existence ceases, it is unreasonable for the mind of the first existence of the later one to arise from that, because if one's own cause ceases before oneself, then at that time there is no cause, so the mind of the first existence of the later one becomes causeless. If it is said to be the second, then when the last existence has not ceased, it is unreasonable for the first existence to arise from that, because the two earlier and later births exist at the same time. If, when the last existence is ceasing, the first mind of the later birth arises naturally, then it is unreasonable, because the existence of a person who is ceasing becomes one, and the existence of the intermediate state of a god who is arising also becomes another, so two dissimilar existences exist at the same time. Third: If ceasing and arising together are also unreasonable, then on which aggregate will death occur, and on that will birth also occur? Thus, in the three times, the continuum of existence is unreasonable, time
