Because it doesn't exist. If it did, it would be contradicted by scripture. The Blessed One, who perfectly understands the reality of things and non-things, in the "Katyayana's Instructions Sutra," also refutes both the extreme of things existing by their own nature and the extreme of not existing in name only. Secondly: If it exists by its own nature, then it will not become non-existence. The nature changing into something else is never reasonable. If nature exists, then what is it that changes into something else? If nature exists, then what is it that changes into something else? So it is said. If things exist by their own nature, then that nature will not become non-existence again by changing into something else, because it is never reasonable for something that exists by its own nature to change into something else. Just as the sky is not obscured, it does not change into something else. Someone says: If things do not exist by their own nature, then what is this appearance of changing into something else? Therefore, it is reasonable that it exists by its own nature. It is not reasonable, even if nature exists by its own essence, what is it that changes into something else, because it is not allowed, thus showing that the beginning and the end are the same. Secondly: Saying "exists" is clinging to permanence, saying "does not exist" is seeing as annihilation. Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence. Whatever exists by its own nature, it is not non-existent, so it is permanent. Saying that it existed before but does not exist now, therefore, it will become annihilation. So it is said. Clinging to things as existing by their own nature is clinging to permanence, that is, clinging to the extreme of permanence; saying that things do not exist at all will become seeing as annihilation. Therefore, the wise should not abide in the two extremes of existence and non-existence, because if they do, it will become an obstacle to liberation. If these two views exist, there will be a way to become permanent and annihilated: Whatever is said to exist by its own nature, because nature does not change, it is never non-existent, so it will become permanent; if something that existed in the past is admitted to be established by its own nature, and then later at some point it is admitted that it does not exist, then it will become seeing as annihilation. The latter is established, if things are established by their own nature, it must be thought that it will never be destroyed, rather than admitting that it does not exist at some point later.

Because when accepted, it becomes a slander of the nature of things. The second is the Sutra of Lankavatara, etc. The third is the explanation of the fifteenth chapter called "Examination of Nature." Third, refuting that bondage and liberation exist by nature, there are two parts: the actual meaning and the refutation of its proof. The first has three parts: explaining the treatise, combining it with scripture, and stating the name. The first has three parts: refuting the establishment of samsara and nirvana by nature, refuting the establishment of bondage and liberation by nature, and avoiding the fault of striving for the meaning of nirvana becoming meaningless. The first has two parts: refuting the establishment of samsara and nirvana by nature. The first has two parts: refuting the aggregates to be taken as samsara, and refuting the sentient beings who take as samsara. The first has two parts: refuting the permanent samsara and the impermanent samsara. The first is: If you say that the aggregates are samsara, then, if these are permanent, they do not revolve. If samsara exists by nature, then what revolves, the aggregates or sentient beings? To this, if you say that the aggregates of formations are samsara, then, are they permanent or impermanent? If these are permanent, then they do not revolve, because they are devoid of the activity of revolving. This is pervasive, because samsara is revolving from the previous life to the next life. The second is: If impermanent, it will not become samsara either. Those aggregates are the nature of things. If they are impermanent, they will not become samsara existing by nature, because they are born and destroyed in an instant, so they do not revolve. The self-view is that although each aggregate and the previous and subsequent moments do not revolve, the cause that follows the general aggregate is merely nominally considered to be samsara, but it does not revolve by nature, because continuity also depends on the previous and subsequent continuous aggregates. The second has two parts: refuting the sentient beings who are different in essence from the aggregates as samsara, and refuting the person who cannot be said to be the same or different from the aggregates as samsara. The first is: Sentient beings also have the same order. If you say that there is a self-substance that is different in essence from the aggregates, then does it revolve? This is not reasonable, because for such sentient beings revolving, this order is the same as what was said before, if it is permanent, then it does not revolve because it is devoid of the activity of going and coming, if it is impermanent, then in an instant
