Fire is not with wood. There is no wood in fire, therefore there is no fire there. Thus it is said. Wood itself is the subject. It is not one with fire, because if it were one, it would become the agent and the action being one. Wood, the subject. There is no fire elsewhere apart from you, because fire arises in dependence on you. Fire, the subject. It is not possessed of the same essence as wood, because the aspect of being one and different in essence has been negated. That fire does not depend on firewood in essence, nor does firewood depend on that fire in essence. Because the establishment of self-nature as other has already been negated. The second is: Fire and firewood, self and all the order of taking, together with vases, felt, etc., are all completely explained. Thus it is said. Previously, by the reasoning that fire and firewood are without self-nature, the taker, the self, and all the order of taking, and furthermore, together with other objects such as vases and felt, all are completely explained as being without self-nature, because for them, the method of applying the reasoning of one and different, dependent and depended upon, coming and going, is similar to what was said before. The third is: Those who think of self and things as being one and different with it, do not think that they are skilled in the meaning of the teaching. Thus it is said. Those who think of the taker, the self, and the nature that is one with the self, and the different nature, and likewise, other things are also one and different in nature, these dharmas, the Protector Nagarjuna does not think that they are skilled in the meaning of the teaching, the suchness of dependent arising, because they admit that the meaning of the harm that comes from reasoning is in accordance with the intent of the scriptures. The reason is that they have not understood that the meaning of dependent arising is the meaning of no self-nature, but instead admit that the establishment of self-nature is the meaning of the teaching. The second is: The Sutra of the King of Samadhis, and so on. The third is: The commentary on the tenth chapter, called "Examination of Fire and Wood." Second, refuting the proof of the existence of a person by nature, there are two: refuting the sign of the existence of birth and death, and refuting the sign of the existence of suffering. The first part has three: explaining the text of the treatise, scripture and

Chapter Two: Exposition of the Name. The first has two parts: refuting the inherent existence of samsara, and applying this reasoning to others. The first has two parts: refuting the parts of beginning, middle, and end in samsara, and refuting the aspects of before, after, and simultaneous in birth and death. The first is: When asked, "Is the prior end manifest?" The Great Sage said, "It is not." Samsara has no beginning and no end, Therefore, it has no prior, no posterior. That which has no beginning and no end, Where, then, is the middle? So forth. Someone might think, "The Teacher said that the continuum of samsara has no beginning or end, so it exists inherently." But this is unreasonable. If samsara existed inherently, then it must have a beginning and an end. However, when the Teacher was asked, "Is the prior end of samsara manifest?" the Great Sage said that the prior end is not manifest. Therefore, that which is shown in this way clearly demonstrates that samsara has no inherent existence. Therefore, samsara is shown to arise in a continuous manner, like a fire wheel turning from one to another, which is for the purpose of understanding that it has no self-establishment. The Teacher said that samsara has no prior or posterior end, and the cycle of birth, aging, and death has no beginning or end. The prior end refers to the prior part, and the posterior end refers to the posterior part, so at that time, samsara is not inherently existent. Because it has no inherently established prior part, and also no posterior part. Samsara is regarded as a succession of before and after, so nominally there are prior and posterior parts, but there are no inherently established prior and posterior parts, because it is not reasonable for an inherently established thing to succeed prior and posterior parts. Our own system holds that samsara has no initial end, but it has a final end, because if there were an initial end, it would become causeless arising, and if there were no final end, then it would be necessary to assert that there is no time of abandoning samsara, which is unreasonable. Here, saying that there is no prior end and no posterior end is not the same as the previous meaning, because here, the continuum of samsara has many prior and posterior parts, but they are condensed into two parts, showing that it is without inherent existence. Whatever samsara is, that phenomenon, where would you have an inherently established middle? Because both the beginning and the end are inherent
