Refutation of Dependence. Refuting dependence by examining the existence or non-existence of dependent factors. Refuting both dependence and non-dependence. The first part has two points: Refuting dependence on temporal priority and simultaneity. The first point is: If it is said that wood depends on fire, if it is said that fire depends on wood, then depending on what do they become fire and wood? What is established first? If it is said that wood depends on fire, then it becomes proving the establishment of something that is not established. For wood that is to be burned, it can also be established without fire. Thus it is said. If it is said that this fire, which exists inherently, is the burner of this firewood, therefore it is established as fire depending on the firewood; if it is said that this wood is the fuel of this fire, therefore wood is established depending on the fire. Then, depending on what do they become fire and wood, what is the dependence that is established first? If firewood exists first, that is unreasonable. If fire is established depending on the wood that is established first, then, depending on what do they become fire and wood, what is the dependence that is established first? If firewood exists first, that is unreasonable. If fire is established depending on the wood that is established first, then fire does not depend on wood, but is separated from the firewood. If that is the case, fire is established by wood, that is, it is necessary to prove the establishment of something that does not exist. It is also unreasonable to think so. Moreover, for wood that is to be burned, wood can also be established without fire, which is unreasonable. The second point of refutation: If things are established depending on something, then they also depend on themselves, if they are established depending on the object of dependence, then depending on what is established? Thus it is said. If it is said that fire and wood are simultaneous, therefore there is no harm, if the thing of fire is established depending on firewood, and its dependence also depends on the firewood that is the object of dependence, then now depending on what, which of fire and wood can be established inherently? This is unreasonable. Fire and wood depend on each other, therefore the two cannot become the proof of each other's inherent establishment. Because, if one exists depending on the other, then it is inherently non-existent, only nominally existent. The second part is: If things are established by dependence, then how can they depend when they are not established?

If it is said to depend on establishment, then it should not depend. (Thus it is said.) Whatever is considered to be established by its own nature depending on firewood, that phenomenon (the view that the entity of fire depends on firewood to be established) is the subject. If its own nature is not established, then how can it be said that it is unreasonable to depend on firewood by its own nature? Because in general, if fire is not established, then depending on firewood is unreasonable. If it is said to depend on the establishment of fire, then such a phenomenon (the view that the establishment of fire depends on firewood) is the subject. It is unreasonable to depend on firewood by its own nature, because it is already established and there is no need to depend on firewood again. Third: There is no fire depending on wood, and there is no fire not depending on wood. There is no wood depending on fire, and there is no wood not depending on fire. (Thus it is said.) Fire depending on wood is the subject, it is empty of its own nature, because if it depends, it is unreasonable for its own nature to be established. Fire not depending on wood is also the subject, it does not exist in name, because if it exists, it would be without cause. Wood depending on fire is also the subject, it is empty of its own nature, because if its own nature is established, then dependence is unreasonable. Wood not depending on fire is also empty of its own nature, because if it is not burning firewood, it should not be firewood. Second: Fire does not come from elsewhere, and there is no fire in wood. (Thus it is said.) If it is said that burning firewood with fire is obvious, so its own nature exists, then this is unreasonable. Because fire does not come separately from other places than firewood, if it comes, it will become without cause. If it comes from the fire pit together with firewood, and then comes again from firewood, then not only will fire come again, but also firewood must come again from firewood. Fire by its own nature does not come from the wood itself, because there is no fire in the wood. Second: Likewise, the remainder of the wood is shown by measuring going and not going. (Thus it is said.) As said before, in the case of firewood, the remainder of the refutation is the subject. There is a way to prevent the establishment of its own nature, because it has already been said "by measuring going and not going," etc., by changing what has already been explained, it is possible to refute. This is also because it is refuted by adding "temporarily burning and not burning," etc. Third: Wood itself is not fire, and there is no fire outside of wood.
