Refutation of the view that there is an agent. The first point is: Once it has become so, there is no action. It will become an action without an agent. Thus it is said. The agent is established through the act of doing, so for the potter etc. who has already become the agent, there is no other action to do that act. If there is, then that action will become an action without an agent, which is unreasonable. Because, if the action and the agent are established by their own nature, then the action must be completely separated and exist separately. If so, there will be the fault of the action becoming two. Because, if one action exists by its own nature on the potter, then it is contradictory for it to exist on the pot. If it exists, then one action will become two. The own view is that although the action of making a pot exists on both the potter and the pot, it exists in name, so there is no contradiction. The second point is: Once it has become so, there is no action. Without action, it will also become an agent. Thus it is said. Action is established through being done by the agent, so for the action that has become so because it has action, there is no other action to do that action now. When there is no action and no action is done, then the person without action must also become the agent, which is unreasonable. Because, there is no agent who does no action at all. The second part is divided into two points: refuting the fall into causelessness, and stating the harm to it. The first point is: If it is not an agent, then if it does what has not become an action, then the action will have no cause. The agent will also become causeless. Thus it is said. If it is thought that it is not an agent but does what has not become an action, that is unreasonable. Because that action will have no cause. Moreover, the cause of establishing that action as an agent will also disappear, because it is separated from the action. The second point is: If there is no cause, then the result and the cause will not be reasonable. If there are none of these, then action, agent, and doing are not reasonable. If actions etc. are not reasonable, then virtue and non-virtue do not exist. If virtue and non-virtue do not exist, then there is no result arising from that. If there is no result, then the path to liberation and becoming a good rebirth is not reasonable. All actions become meaningless.

will become a fault. Thus it is said. If there is no cause for what can be done and the doer, then there will be no result, such as earthenware pots. If there is no result, then its causes, such as potters and wheels, will also not be reasonable. If these two, cause and effect, do not exist, then the act of making earthenware pots and the maker, and his making of earthenware pots, are also unreasonable. If actions and so on are unreasonable, then virtuous Dharma and non-virtuous Dharma will not exist. If these Dharma and non-Dharma do not exist, then the fruits arising from the two, happiness and suffering, will not exist. If there are no fruits of happiness and suffering, then the path to liberation and higher realms is also unreasonable. In this way, worldly activities, such as agriculture, will all become meaningless endeavors. This statement shows that there is no action without an agent. Because the action of work depends on the agent to arise. Therefore, everything said before is reasonable and exists, this is the throwing of a refutation. Second, the refutation of the three-part act and agent: Because the agent has become or not become, the become or not become does not do it, being and not being become on one basis, how can there be no contradiction with each other. Thus it is said. In terms of nomenclature, both the agent who has become and the one who has not become do not do what has become an action and what has not become an action. Because becoming an action and not becoming an action are not contradictory to each other on one basis, how can there be? Because they are contradictory. Second, there are two refutations of dissimilar aspects: refuting each dissimilar aspect one by one, and each one doing two. First: The agent who has become does not do the unbecome action, the unbecome also does not do the become, here too, the same fault is committed. Thus it is said. The agent who has become, each does not do what has not become an action, and each unbecome agent also does not do what has become an action. Because, as previously stated, there is an agent without action and an action without an agent, therefore here too, the same fault will be committed. Second: The unbecome agent and, having the unbecome action, do not do the become and unbecome, the words have already been said before. The unbecome agent and, the unbecome action and having, do not do the become and unbecome
