Even if those faults of refutation apply, it is necessary to understand the difference that it does not apply to the system of establishing without seeking the meaning of imputation. Except for the Prasangikas, others seek the meaning of imputation such as arising and ceasing, and hold that they establish it after finding it, so they are subject to such logical harm. In this system, merely establishing a name without examining or investigating with intelligence, arising and ceasing, etc., are reasonably established. Therefore, it is not harmed by the reasoning mentioned above. So, if sprouts, etc., have three: arising, abiding, and ceasing, are they established as those three: arising, abiding, and ceasing, or not? Like sprouts, although they are not established as their own three: arising, abiding, and ceasing, in general, it is necessary to establish them as three: arising, abiding, and ceasing. Because all things like sprouts arise, but there is change into something else, so it is arising; it abides in its own time and does not stay for a second moment, it is impermanent, so it is also ceasing. It is in the process of decaying and in the process of destroying, so it is ceasing, but it is not already decayed and already destroyed. However, this system holds that there is decay, and that it is a real entity. The Svatantrikas and below do not accept decay as a real entity, the details of which can be learned from Je Rinpoche's commentary and the explanation of the Madhyamakavatara. The three: arising, abiding, and ceasing of all things are non-associated compositional factors, but if it is the three: arising, abiding, and ceasing, then it does not necessarily have to be a non-associated compositional factor, as mentioned before. Second, refuting by summarizing: "Arising and abiding and ceasing, since they are not established, there is no conditioned." So it is said. Although the general characteristic or the signified nature of the conditioned is not established, if the Vaibhashikas think that the nature of earth, such as hardness, exists by its own nature, then it is unreasonable. Because the four distinctions, the conditioned, do not exist by their own nature. Because arising and abiding and ceasing, etc., are not established by their own nature. The second is: "Since the conditioned is completely unestablished, how can the unconditioned be established?" So it is said. If it is thought that the opposite of the conditioned, the unconditioned, exists by its own nature, then, since the conditioned, as mentioned before, is completely unestablished by its own nature, how can the unconditioned, space, etc., be established as existing by its own nature? It is not established, because the characteristic of the unconditioned, which is the characteristic of the absence of the conditioned, cannot be established. Third, like a dream, illu-

Like a mirage. Like a city of gandharvas. Thus it arises, thus it abides. Thus it is said to perish. Thus it is. If you refute that arising and so forth exist by their own nature, then the Buddha also manifests the arising of conditioned phenomena. If someone says that this contradicts what the Buddha said, then it is not contradictory. Because the Buddha's teachings are like dreams, like illusions, like the arising and ceasing of cities of gandharvas, and so on. Conditioned phenomena also arise in the same way, abide in the same way, and perish in the same way. But it is not said that their essence arises and ceases by its own nature. Just as dreams and so on, although they do not exist as they appear, can still perform actions, so too, although conditioned phenomena do not exist by their own nature, they can still manifest actions in name. The second example is the Samadhiraja Sutra and so on. The third example is the commentary on the seventh chapter of the Treatise on Examining Arising, Abiding, and Ceasing. Third, refuting the existence of cause, effect, and agent, divided into three: Explaining the tenets of the treatise, Combining with scriptural authority, Indicating the name. First, divided into three: Refuting that action and agent are established by their own nature, How to establish them relying on names, Extending this reasoning to other aspects. First: The Buddha showed that there are individuals who create good and bad actions. If one thinks that action and agent have their own nature, in order to refute this, divided into two: Refuting that the doer and the deed of the same and different classes are established by their own nature, first, divided into two: The doer and the deed of the first two clauses, Refuting the doer and the deed of the third clause. First, divided into two: Stating the proposition, Explaining the reason. First: That which has become the agent, Does not do that which has become the action. That which has not become the agent, Does not do that which has not become the action. Thus it is. That which has become the agent from the perspective of having a function, will not by its own nature do that which has become the action from the perspective of having a function, because it will be obstructed by the reasoning below. That which has not become the agent will also not do that action which has not become the action, because it will be obstructed by reasoning. Second, divided into two: The reason for the first proposition, The reason for the second proposition. First, divided into two: Refuting by establishing that there is action that no one does. That which does nothing
