Having seen that the dependence of the earth element has not been established, it is unreasonable to want to exist together in order to accomplish that necessity, because for it, mutually dependent co-existence is not permissible. If, in order to thoroughly prove that it is permissible, it must also be accepted as separate, then this is untenable, like an elephant's trunk, or it will become flawed again. Therefore, since the reality of those two inherently distinct things has not been established, the reality of being together will also not be established, nor will it fail to be established, because it is established only on the separate. In general, co-existence does not pervade mutual dependence, but if it is inherently established together, it must always exist inseparably, so this is what is being refuted. Second: Thus, desire and the desirer, co-existent, non-co-existent, are not established. Thus, according to the reasoning stated above, desire and the desirer, the subject, are not established by nature, because neither simultaneous co-existence nor non-co-existence, nor anything that exists inherently, is established. Third, applying that reasoning to other things: Like desire, all phenomena, co-existent, non-co-existent, are not established. As said about desire, all phenomena such as hatred and the hater, the subject, are not established as inherently existing in either co-existence or non-co-existence, because they are equally harmed by the reasoning stated above. The second is the Samadhiraja Sutra and others. The third is the commentary on the sixth chapter of the treatise called "Analysis of Desire and the Desirer." Second, refuting characteristics, arising, abiding, and ceasing, in three parts: the text of the treatise, combining with scripture, and indicating the name. The first has two parts: stating the previous position and refuting it. The first is: The three, arising, ceasing, and abiding, spoken of in the Abhidharma, are included in non-associated compositional factors, which most of the higher and lower schools of our own tradition accept. Among them, the Sutra school and above consider them to be imputed, while the Vaibhashika school considers them to be substantially existent. The characteristics of arising, etc., are considered by the Sutra school and above to be the function of whatever is conditioned, while the Vaibhashikas consider them to be in the difference of the agent; the manner of acceptance should be understood. The second has three parts: the characteristics of conditioned things.

Now refuting self-establishment. From this, the way to refute the self-establishment of non-arisen phenomena. Avoiding contradictions with the scriptures. The first part has two points: refuting the general and specific definitions. The first part has two points: common and individual refutations. The first part has three points: refuting by examining whether it is an arisen phenomenon or not, refuting by examining what it represents, and refuting by examining whether there are other definitions. The first point is: If arising is an arisen phenomenon, then it should also have three definitions. If arising is not an arisen phenomenon, then how can it be a definition of an arisen phenomenon? That's what it says. That is, the Vaibhashikas believe that arisen phenomena are represented by arising and other things that are different from themselves. If so, is arising an arisen phenomenon? Or a non-arisen phenomenon? If arising is an arisen phenomenon, then, arising, as a phenomenon, you should also have the definitions of arising, abiding, and ceasing, that is, having three collections different from yourself, because these three are not confused for all arisen phenomena like you. If you admit it, then it should not be, because arising has already admitted that the basis for representing the definition of aggregates and other arisen phenomena is different things. The reason for saying this is that when arising represents arisen phenomena, it has been admitted that it is represented in the form of different things. The self-school believes that the three of arising, ceasing, and abiding represent arisen phenomena, but they are represented in the same way as the entity. If arising is not an arisen phenomenon, then, arising, as a phenomenon, how can it be a definition of representing arisen phenomena? It should not be, because it is not an arisen phenomenon, like space. The second point is: The three of arising and so on, each individually, cannot be done for the definition of arisen phenomena, that's what it says. Do arising and so on represent sequentially or together? The first case is: The three definitions of arising and so on, each individually, that is, relying only on themselves, cannot be done for the definition of representing aggregates and other arisen phenomena, because it is impossible to have only one of the three of arising and so on, because the arising of a sprout, in its own time, also has the definitions of abiding and ceasing. The second case is: On one thing, gathering at the same time, how is it possible? That's what it says. The Sutra school and others say: The three of arising and so on of one arisen phenomenon represent at the same time, then, these three definitions on one thing, at the same time, in the form of self-nature, represent arisen phenomena also
