Because it is unreasonable. If desire is established by its own nature, then relying on the previously existing support, desire must be later existing, because it is reasonable to say: this desire is established relying on this basis. Therefore, it is unreasonable for the desirer, the person, and the consciousness to exist before and after desire, because desire would become without a support. The attachment here should be understood as attachment to people and various consciousnesses, not attachment to desire. The second is: For attachment, desire is, whether it exists or not, the order is the same. So it is said. There is no desire before attachment, and if it exists, desire will become without a support. If it is thought that attachment is a later existing desirer, then even an Arhat who is separated from desire will have desire, because the order is the same. Or, for attachment, whether desire exists earlier or not, it is the same as the previously mentioned order. Second, refuting simultaneous arising, of which the second is: Desire and attachment, it is impossible to arise simultaneously. In this way, desire and attachment, will become mutually independent. So it is said. If it is thought that desire and attachment are different in nature, then, desire and the desirer, as dharmas, it is unreasonable for them to arise simultaneously as different in nature, because in that case, you would become mutually independent, but in reality they are mutually dependent. The second point is divided into two parts: generally refuting the co-arising of one and different, and specifically refuting the co-arising of different. The first is: One itself is not co-arising, because that itself is not co-arising with it. If it is really different, how can it be co-arising? If it is alone co-arising, then it will also be there without a companion. If different entities are co-arising, then it will also be there without a companion. So it is said. Desire and attachment, both together, are they considered one or different? If it is the first case, it is unreasonable, because if the two are one, then it cannot be co-arising, because like desire, it is unreasonable for the single one itself to exist together with it. If it is the second case, if the two are really different in nature, then it is also unreasonable, because if it is different in nature, how can it be co-arising?

Because of reason, like light and darkness. If according to both ways of examination, if either of the two alone is cognized together, that is also unreasonable. Because solitary things like a bull without a companion would also become things that exist together. If the two are different in essence, but still exist together, that is also unreasonable. Because solitary things existing separately without a companion would also become things that exist together. In general, it must be admitted that desire and attachment exist simultaneously and together. If it is established by essence, it must exist independently. For that, the one and the different of being together as the supported and the supporter are also not reasonable. The second has three parts: because it is not established as different, it cannot be established as together; if it is established as different, there is no need to be together; if it relies on different and together, it is shown to be mutually dependent. The first point: If different is together, then, what? Will desire and attachment be established as different? Therefore, the two will become together. Thus it is said. If desire and attachment are different in essence, but it is thought that they are together, that is unreasonable. What? Will desire and attachment be established as mutually independent differences? No. Therefore, the two will become unrelated together, like a horse and a cow. Because the two are separate things that are mutually independent. Because they are separate in essence. The second point: If desire and attachment are established as different, then, why are they fully cognized as being together? Thus it is said. If desire and attachment are established as different in nature, that is unreasonable. Because in that way, the dependence of desire on this object, with this possessor of attachment, becoming attached to this object, cannot be established. Desire and attachment, as the subject, why are they fully cognized as being together? This is unreasonable. Because if they are different in essence, there is no dependence, so they cannot be together. The third point: Because it is not established as different, therefore, if one wants to be together, does one also want to be different in order to establish being together well? Because different things are not established, together things will not be established. Thus it is said. The two are only different, with this being attached to that
