The method of calculating the three asamkhyas is as follows: It was said earlier that one accumulates merit in the three asamkhyas. How are these three established? That is, in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosa, the first of the two ways of counting, the single count and the bundle count, is: one, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, and million, ten million, hundred million, etc., know that these are single count numbers. The second is the bundle count: Trillion (1), Quadrillion (2), Quintillion (3), Sextillion (4), Septillion (5), Octillion (6), Nonillion (7), Decillion (8), Undecillion (9), Duodecillion (10), Tredecillion (11), Quattuordecillion (12), Quindecillion (13), Sexdecillion (14), Septendecillion (15), Octodecillion (16), Centillion (17), Googol (18), Googolplex (19), and Vigintillion (20), Centvigintillion (21). Thus, the single count has nine places from one to a billion, and the bundle count has twenty-one places from a trillion to Centvigintillion. That is, ten billions is one trillion, ten trillions is one great trillion, ten great trillions is one quadrillion, ten quadrillions is one great quadrillion, ten great quadrillions is one quintillion, ten quintillions is one great quintillion, and so on, increasing tenfold up to Centvigintillion. The bundle count has forty-two places, plus the nine places of the single count, for a total of fifty-one. If we calculate with sixty places, adding the names of the four immeasurables, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, to the previous fifty-one, and adding "great" as before, there are fifty-nine places. The sixtieth place is beyond the above numbers, so it is called asamkhya. Again, it is increased tenfold, so it is said to be three asamkhyas. There are different kinds of statements about the bundle count. There are two kinds of statements, one that combines Sextillion and Septillion, and one that separates them. There are two kinds of statements about whether or not there is a "Nonillion" after Centvigintillion, but our own view is the same as above. Although it is faster to skip over asamkhya and calculate, it is very slow to calculate by reciting the names one by one. For example, reciting one hundred million mani mantras takes about ten years even if one person recites diligently. Thus, it is clear that it would not be possible to complete counting asamkhya one by one even in fifty years. Third, there are different ways of stating other establishments of numbers. In India, what the common people say is: one, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, and million, ten million, hundred million, and trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, extreme, etc.

It is said that "wiping sand," "ocean-fold increase," and so on are worldly number names. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it says: "A hundred times a hundred is a thousand. A thousand times a thousand is a million. A million times a million is a koti. A koti times a koti is an ayuta. An ayuta times an ayuta is a niyuta. A niyuta times a niyuta is a pimbara. A pimbara times a pimbara is a kinkara. A kinkara times a kinkara is an agara. An agara times an agara is a supreme. A supreme times a supreme is a mahabala. A mahabala times a mahabala is an apama. An apama times an apama is a tabama. A tabama times a tabama is a division. A division times a division is a puma. A puma times a puma is a padma. A padma times a padma is a samkhya. A samkhya times a samkhya is a pindura. A pindura times a pindura is immeasurable. Immeasurable times immeasurable is a great number. A great number times a great number is inconceivable. Inconceivable times inconceivable is immeasurable countless. Immeasurable countless times immeasurable countless is immeasurable countless turns." It is also said that one hundred and twenty-eight number names arise in this way: one hundred times one hundred is a thousand, one thousand times one thousand is a million, one million times one million is a koti, a koti times a koti is an ayuta, an ayuta times an ayuta is a niyuta, and so on, counting in this way. These methods of counting even surpass "countless" and "unspeakable," and their limit is beyond the realm of ordinary beings. Furthermore, in the Extensive Play Sutra, koti
