Attribution is like saying that experiencing happiness and suffering now is due to past karma, or like wind disease and bile disease. Attributing the name of the result to the cause is like attributing the name of Buddha to the tenth bhumi bodhisattva, or like attributing the name Bodhicitta to a mind that is like the taste of molasses, or like referring to green sprouts of barley, etc., as barley, etc. Attributing a general name to a specific thing is like referring to wealth as things. Attributing a specific name to a general thing is like referring to all renunciants as lamas in other places. A valid attributed name must possess the three qualities accepted there, namely, if it is attributed without reason or necessity, it would lead to the fault of attributing everything to everything, and the attributor would have the fault of not being wise. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "If you want to attribute here, by what reason do you attribute it? Likewise, why not attribute all things as causes by those?" Therefore, there must be something that harms the real thing; if not, it would become an unreasonable attributed name. Regarding the explanation of words, in the scriptures that are widely known, as the great translator Palotsawa said: "Two names or many names, that which expresses the difference of meaning, is the word revealed by the holy Dharma, which is the collection of letters." For example, "conditioned is impermanent" is a collection of two names, and "all contaminated things are suffering" and "all phenomena are selfless" are collections of many names, as well as longer phrases in the scriptures. In the treatises on sound, it is said that "words are those that end with Supa and Ting." Therefore, words that end with Supa and Ting, as well as those that end with Si and other case endings, and those that end with Ti and other endings, are called words, which is different from the former. A real letter refers to the sound of language and is born from the consciousness of one's own cause, which is effort. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Letters are born from the consciousness of effort, and sound is born in consciousness." Regarding the duration, it is also said: "The nature of letters, all limits also, exist as long as a blink of an eye." The three, name, word, and letter, are considered by all internal schools to be composite things and are the nature of sound, existing in all people, high and low. Some scholars, such as the Sautrantikas and Vaibhashikas, consider them to be non-

It is said that mere conception is considered as knowledge. Therefore, the shapes of written letters are not the actual letters, but merely designations for them, like sculpted Buddha images. The forms of letters, in general, are difficult to measure in the entire world, but there are sixty-four types of scripts. Even if there are one or two discrepancies among them, in one pure system, they are arranged like the letters of Brahma: Kharoshthi, Lotus Heart, Anga, Banga, Magadha, Auspicious, Finger, Shakana, Padani, Ahuba, Rough, Troding, Mon Country, Southern, Fierce, Numerical, Spyu Tsug, Compliant, Dharida, Khyasya, Chinese, Huna, Central, Royal, Divine, Naga, Yaksha, Gandharva, Kinnara, Great Belly Walker, Asura, Garuda, Deer Wheel, Crow's Language, Earth Deity, Space Deity, Bull Practice, Unpleasant Sound, Body Majestic, Lifting, Placing, Completely Placing, Seaside, Vajra, Transmitting, Completely Transmitting, Classification, Small, Treatise Category, Arithmetic Category, Lifting Category, Written by Foot, Subsequent Sentence Completed, As Long as Subsequent Sentence Completed, Intermediate Completion, Compendium of All Sounds, Kind and Compliant, Mixed, Afflicted by Ascetic Sage, Clear, Completely Clear, Common Cause of All Medicines, Letters of Compendium of Essence, totaling sixty-four. Most of these have not appeared in Tibet. What exists in Tibet are: Brahma's script Lantsa, which has two types, hollow and fleshy. Similar to this are the five types of Dharika's script. Raising its head upwards, it becomes the six types of Nagar script. Bending the head downwards is the Naga script Vattula. It is said that there are also three different Kashmiri scripts, etc. These are explanations derived from the young Dondrup's study of scripts. Furthermore, in the "Ten Deeds," it says, "Surpassing the sixty-four arts." As it is said, the sixty-four arts, etc., are mentioned in the Extensive Play Sutra: Offering, writing, manual calculation, arithmetic, numbers, giant's grip, throwing from afar, racing, rows, swimming, hip measurement, taming elephants, horsemanship, chariot methods, bow and arrow methods, steadfastness, strength, bravery, gait, methods of converting with iron hooks, rope methods, forward.
