It is not because of the way of abiding that is not real. If it were, it would not be enough for just the appearance of a vase to the valid cognition that apprehends the vase. It must have its own independent way of abiding, and if it does, then the object of the Noble One's meditative equipoise must also exist, because it would become truly established. Generally, like a vase, it is established from the perspective of its own way of abiding, because the vase is established as a vase from its own side. That is posited due to its appearance to the mind, but it is not established by its own way of abiding without relying on the mind's positing. If it were established, then even a child who does not know the name of a vase would have the thought, 'This is a vase,' because that would be a consequence. This also applies to other things. These schools hold that self-established, established from its own side, established by its own characteristic, and established as a substance are terms that exist nominally. However, truly established, ultimately established, genuinely established, and established as suchness are considered to be the ultimate objects of negation for a valid sign, because those are merely synonyms for truly established. That is just a rough examination, and there is no such thing as truly established, because if the basis is established, it must be unreal. Second, explaining the reasons that refute the object of negation. For the Madhyamikas, there are five great reasons for establishing that phenomena are unreal: the vajra sliver reasoning that examines causes, the reasoning of arising and ceasing that examines whether or not there are effects, the reasoning of the four alternatives of arising and ceasing that examines both causes and effects, the king of reasonings, the reasoning of dependent origination, and the main topic to be discussed here, the reasoning of being separate from one and many. The first is that external and internal phenomena are the subject. They do not arise ultimately, because they do not arise from themselves, they do not arise ultimately from others, they do not arise from both self and other, and they do not arise from no cause. As it says in the Root Wisdom: Not from self, not from other, not from both, nor from no cause. Phenomena, wherever, are never found to arise. The second is that those are the subject. They do not arise ultimately, because they do not arise when they exist at the time of their own cause, nor do they arise ultimately when they do not exist, nor do they arise ultimately when both exist.

Yes, it is like saying, "Because it is neither, it does not actually arise." As it says in the Ornament of the Middle Way: "What exists does not arise because it exists, what does not exist is like a lotus in the sky. Because the dharmas do not agree, they are not two dharmas, nor is it the nature of two." Because it is said like that. The third is: Knowable things, dharmas, fruits, etc., do not actually arise, because many causes do not produce one fruit, many causes also do not produce many fruits, one cause also does not produce many fruits, and one cause also does not produce one fruit. Like this, in the Two Truths of the Middle Way it says: "Many do not make one thing, many do not make many things, one does not make many things, and one does not make one thing." Because it is said like that. The fourth is: External and internal things, dharmas, do not actually exist, because they are interdependent arising. When stated like that, it is such a reason. In the Sutra Requested by Anavatapta it says: "That which is born from conditions is unborn, it does not have the nature of being born. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be emptiness. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful." And in the Root Wisdom it says: "Whatever arises from interdependence, those are extinguished by their very nature." Because it is said like that. There is a reason why the reasoning of interdependence is called the king of reasons, because other reasons must ultimately rely on the reasoning of interdependence, and the reason of interdependence can simultaneously prevent the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, therefore it is said like that. The latter is established, if it is understood as interdependence, it is understood as existing in name, thereby eliminating the extreme of annihilation, and it is understood as not actually existing, thereby eliminating the extreme of permanence. As it says in the Introduction to the Middle Way: "Therefore, this reasoning of interdependence cuts through all the nets of evil views." Because it is said like that. The fifth is divided into two parts: identifying the three of reason, dharma, and meaning, and explaining the way of preventing. The first is existent, here taking the three of basis, path, and result as the basis of debate, and then proving non-inherent existence by the reason of interdependence, the reason is the non-establishment of either one that is truly established or many that are truly established. Wanting to know the dharma of the three of basis, path, and result, there is no fault, non-inherent existence is the probandum.
