The Extremely Clear Lamp of the General Meaning of the First Chapter of the Ornament of Realization The Extremely Clear Lamp of the General Meaning of the First Chapter of the Ornament of Realization The Extremely Clear Lamp of the General Meaning of the First Chapter of the Ornament of Realization, is completed. Namo Guru Manjughoshaya! First, with the power of compassion, generating the supreme mind of enlightenment; in the middle, with great diligence, accumulating merit for three countless eons; finally, free from the faults of wrongdoing, manifestly enlightened, for the sake of those to be tamed, turning the three wheels of Dharma, to that teacher I respectfully prostrate! The protector himself, with his own precious diadem, tied upon the head of whom, as the regent, empowered and composed five treatises of his own doctrine, I pay homage to the invincible protector Maitreya, who explains the intention of the Victorious One! The sons of Maitreya, who attained the three grounds, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Vimuktisena, Prince Simhabhadra, the second Buddha, father and sons, along with the lineage, may the spiritual friends take care of us with their blessings! For the benefit of oneself and others, the previously stated, the commentary on the Holy Mother, the Ornament of Realization, the explanation of words, the general meaning, and the annotations, etc., here I briefly write the Lamp of the General Meaning. Here, what is to be explained is the general meaning of the treatise Ornament of Realization and its commentaries. Having entered thus, because of the great benefit that arises, as it says in the Uttaratantra: Whoever hears even a word from this, and having heard it, believes in it, this is far more excellent and superior than the merit arising from generosity. And as it says in the Madhyantavibhaga: Writing, offering, and giving, etc., up to immeasurable heaps of merit. Therefore, there are three points here: Grasping the root sutra to be explained, how the root explains the sutra, and how the commentary explains the root. First, some predecessors believe that the root sutra to be explained in the Ornament is definitely seventeen mother and son scriptures. That is, the Hundred Thousand Verses, Twenty Thousand Verses, Eighteen Thousand Verses, the Perfection of Wisdom in Ten Thousand Verses, the Eight Thousand Verses, the Condensed Sutra, etc., are the six mother scriptures, and the Perfection of Wisdom in Seven Hundred Verses, Five Hundred Verses, Three Hundred Verses, One Hundred and Fifty Verses, Fifty Verses, the Twenty-Five Door Sutra, the Sutra Requested by Valiant Victory, the Sutra Requested by Kausika, the Perfection of Wisdom in Few Letters, the One Letter Sutra, the Heart Sutra, etc., are the eleven son scriptures.

Because this is certain. The first six are called "Mother" because they fully demonstrate the eight realizations. The later ones do not demonstrate in this way, only demonstrating a part, so they are called "Son." It is said that this is because of this reason. This is unreasonable because both the meaning of "Mother" and "Son" and the determination of the number are flawed. The reason is that, based solely on this way of demonstrating, the meaning of "Mother" and "Son" and the terms are not consistent. Moreover, the "Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra" is the eighty-fourth chapter, so it should not be quoted separately from it. Not only are there eleven sutras designated as "Son," but also the "Essence of the Sun Prajnaparamita," the "Essence of the Moon Prajnaparamita," the "Samantabhadra's Conduct and Vows," "Vajrapani," the "Sutra Requested by Vajradhvaja," and so on. There are many other sutras of the Prajnaparamita. According to our own system, the root sutras to be explained by the "Ornament of Clear Realization" are clearly four or five, namely the Extensive, Medium, and Concise Prajnaparamita Sutras, and the "Collected Sutra," making four. If the "Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra" is quoted separately, then it is determined to be five. The reason is that these sutras all have qualified commentaries combined with the "Ornament," while other sutras do not have such commentaries. For both, the root sutras have a way of explaining the sutras. As it is said in the "Commentary on the Nature of Phenomena": "For those who speak of the meaning of the sutras, I will give the oral instructions. Containing the essential points of the meaning, containing the words and meaning, containing the connections, containing the refutations and answers." As it is said, the "Ornament" explains the sutras through the five branches. That is, it explains the necessity through "the path of all-knowingness," and so on. It explains the concise meaning through "Prajnaparamita is truly explained by eight things," and so on. It explains the words and meaning through "The generation of the mind is for the benefit of others," and so on. It connects through "From then on, all-knowingness" and "From then on, the lion's majesty," and so on. It establishes through refutations and answers through "The realm of phenomena is without distinction," and so on, and "By eliminating disputes" and "Showing the countless," and so on. There is a need to explain in this way because by explaining the necessity, the listeners are able to see the two necessities, thereby generating pursuit, and enter through hearing and thinking. Through the concise meaning, one is able to understand the rough meaning. Through the words and meaning, one is able to thoroughly understand the meaning, and through refutations and answers, one eliminates the contradictions between the previous and the later, and the direct and indirect.
