The heat of the Mahayana path of application is established through obtaining the special ability to destroy the knowable obscurations, afflictions, graspable and grasping, and manifest conceptual elaborations; the peak of the path of application is established through obtaining the special ability to destroy the knowable obscurations, purification, graspable and grasping, and manifest conceptual elaborations; the forbearance of the path of application is established through obtaining the special ability to destroy the knowable obscurations, substantialist clinging thoughts, and manifest conceptual elaborations; the supreme mundane dharma of the Mahayana path of application is established through obtaining the special ability to destroy the knowable obscurations, imputed clinging thoughts, and manifest conceptual elaborations. Why? Because from heat onwards, the clear appearance of the nature of phenomena is obtained; from the peak, it increases; from forbearance, the clear appearance of the nature of phenomena that is clung to is obtained; from the supreme mundane dharma, it increases, and thus it is destroyed. Why? Because in the Ornament of the Sutras, it is said, "At that time, the various distractions of what is grasped by it will be abandoned; thus, the various distractions of clinging will be abandoned in its access and obstruction." The reason why such differences occur is that these four phenomena of graspable and grasping have differences in the ease and difficulty of determination. The reason for applying names such as heat is that the fire of the wisdom arising from meditation, which is the union of calm abiding and special insight that realizes emptiness, first arises, hence it is called heat; it greatly increases, hence it is called the peak; it does not fear emptiness, hence it is called forbearance; and because it is the supreme of mundane paths, it is called the supreme mundane dharma. Third, what kind of intelligence is it? The four paths of application of the Mahayana that realize emptiness, which do not precede the inferior path, are not valid cognitions, because they are not direct valid cognitions, nor are they inferential valid cognitions. The former is not, because it does not directly realize emptiness. Nor is it inferential, because it is knowledge arising from meditation. Therefore, it is non-valid cognition, and it is also investigative wisdom regarding emptiness, which is any one of the seven types of intelligence. Because it is not any of the other six. Why? Because it is not a valid cognition, nor is it any of the other five. Why the latter? Because not being doubt and wrong view is easy to determine, nor is it discursive thought, because it is wisdom that does not deceive emptiness. It is not a mind that is uncertain about appearances, because it is a direct
