Although it is most severe in the Avici Hell, it is mostly there. To clearly understand these differences, one needs to learn from the Lamrim and other sources, but if summarized, it is like this: In the Reviving Hell, the body is struck by a rain of weapons and dies; in the Black Line Hell, lines are drawn on the body, and then they die in that way; in the Crushing Hell, they are bound between iron mountains; in the Howling Hell, beings are thrown into an iron chamber from which they cannot escape; in the Great Howling Hell, they are thrown into the second level of the iron chamber; in the Heating Hell, they are thrown into a burning iron pot and burned, and struck with plows, or struck with iron hammers, thus suffering the hellish torment; in the Very Hot Hell, three-pronged iron spikes are inserted from the buttocks and come out from the crown of the head and the shoulders, or hot iron plates and the like are wrapped around the body, and they are boiled like beans in a burning iron pot; in the Avici Hell, the force of burning flames comes from all four directions, burning until it reaches the bones; and being poured into an iron mortar, and so on, are numerous. The Cold Hells are: all the ground is ice, and all sides are surrounded by snow mountains, trapped in a cold cave, and due to the extremely cold blizzard, some parts of the bodies of beings develop a hundred blisters, some parts of the blisters burst, and some bodies are cracked by many fissures. The freezing there is like what is called "Charam". If the eight cold hells are summarized and explained: the Blister Hell refers to the formation of blisters on the body due to cold; the Bursting Blister Hell refers to the bursting of blisters due to extreme cold; "Sotam Tamba", "Jihud", and "Achuu" refer to different cries caused by cold; cracking like an Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, Chinese literal meaning: blue lotus) means that the body cracks into five or six blue pieces; cracking like a lotus means that the body cracks into about ten red pieces; cracking like a great lotus means that the body cracks into a hundred or more bright red pieces. The difference in the degree of suffering between the two hells is that, as stated in the "Friendly Letter": "The pain of being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in one day here is less than a small fraction of the small suffering of hell, yet it does not lead to death, and is difficult to endure." That is how it is. Second is the Pretas: One type of being born as a preta, their face is covered by long hair hanging down from the top of their head.

Furthermore, their mouths are extremely parched, and they see a river far away. Desiring to drink, they run towards it, but people wielding weapons like swords and spears prevent them from drinking. Even if there is no guard, when they reach the water's edge, due to their karma, the water appears as pus and blood, and they do not see it as water. Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, and large goiters on their necks block their throats, so even if they find food and drink, they cannot consume it. Even if they eat or drink a little, when it reaches their stomachs, it ignites a fire that burns their bodies, including their stomachs and throats. Some, unable to find other food, sustain themselves with impure excrement. Some even cut off their own flesh to eat. That is to say, does a person preventing them mean preventing them from drinking? Such pretas have external obscurations. Having a mouth like the eye of a needle means having internal obscurations. Eating excrement means that the food and drink themselves have obscurations. The difference is explained in detail in the Suhrllekha: 'Suffering unbearable thirst, they see a clear river from afar, wanting to approach and drink, but upon reaching it, it turns into a mixture of hair, corpses of fish, swarms of insects mixed with pus and blood, and water filled with mud and filth.' It is extensively explained up to 'The poison of their mouths dries up even drops of water.' It is also mentioned in the Suhrllekha. Third, animals are obscured by the great darkness of ignorance regarding what to adopt and abandon. They lack the intellectual capacity to properly distinguish between the right path and the wrong path, and they cannot distinguish them. They experience the suffering of beings of the same kind killing each other. Some are enslaved by gods and humans, and they endure great suffering as they are beaten with sticks, ridden, and used for carrying loads. As it is said in the Suhrllekha: 'In the animal realm, there is also killing, binding, beating, and various kinds of suffering. Those who have abandoned peaceful virtues experience the most terrifying and repulsive act of eating each other. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and skin, and are dominated by others. Other powerless ones are [beaten] with feet or sticks.'
