There was a Pandit who had accomplished visions. He debated with a Charvaka (materialist) about the existence of future lives. Although the Charvaka was defeated, he did not concede that he had actually seen the existence of future lives. So, the Pandit, having influenced the king and others, made a vow to be reborn as the son of a royal Pandit. As he had vowed, the signs of his rebirth actually appeared, and the king and others believed in the existence of future lives. As soon as he was born, he bowed to his mother and said, "Are you tired?" The mother replied, "How can a newborn baby speak? Be quiet!" Therefore, he lived like a mute for eight years. At that time, a learned Charvaka Pandit wrote a verse and gave it to the king, saying, "If there is a Buddhist who understands the meaning of this verse, let him debate with me. If no one can understand, then all Buddhists should convert to Charvaka." No one understood it as he did. This teacher explained the meaning of the verse and converted the Charvaka and his retinue to Buddhism. The detailed story is found elsewhere. The king gave him his daughter in marriage, but he did not stay with her. The king put him in a box and sent him down the Ganges River. The teacher prayed to Tara, and he emerged from the seashore and stayed in a certain place, where a city was built. He established many bases for Mahayana Buddhism. Then, he went to Nalanda and met Chandrakirti teaching Dharma outside the monastery. An image of Manjushri was placed in a wooden chariot. Chandrakirti and Chandragomin sat on the right and left, respectively. As they entered the monastery, Chandragomin offered praises to the image, and the image tilted its head to the left, as if listening, and thus became known as "Manjushri Tilting to the Left." After entering the monastery, Chandragomin stayed in a temple of Avalokiteshvara and followed the Yogacara tradition like Asanga. Chandrakirti followed the tradition of Nagarjuna, and the two debated for a long time. Chandrakirti posed some difficult questions, but Chandragomin asked the noble Avalokiteshvara for advice and gave answers without difficulty. Chandrakirti found it difficult to refute his answers and thought, "This person must have a teacher who is teaching him debate." So he secretly followed him and peeked through the crack in the door, and he saw that a stone statue of Avalokiteshvara had transformed into the real Avalokiteshvara, teaching Chandragomin with his finger.

The master taught the students like a teacher. He asked, "Does the noble one have favoritism?" When the door was opened, he himself turned into a stone statue, with his finger pointing upwards, hence he was known as the Noble One with the Upright Finger, and the dispute subsided at that time. Chandrakirti prayed to Avalokiteśvara and saw him in a dream, and later through practice, he saw him in person. The grammar of the *Samantabhadra's Prayer of Good Conduct* is very perfect, but he did not promote it here. Caṇḍa Gomin composed a treatise on grammar called *Caṇḍapa*, which was very popular in both India and Tibet. In it, there are many treatises on terminology, including craftsmanship, grammar, logic, medicine, drama, prosody, lexicography, poetry, astrology, etc. When he was mainly teaching the students, he was encouraged by Tārā, and mainly taught the *Ten Bhūmi Sūtra*, the *Samādhirāja Sūtra*, the *Ganda Vyūha Sūtra*, the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*, and the *Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras*, and the former ones were only mentioned in passing, and he composed a root practice method for Avalokiteśvara and Tārā respectively. A beautiful daughter of a poor woman begged the teacher because she had no dowry for her marriage. The teacher, out of compassion, prayed to a painted image of Tārā, and the image turned into Tārā, and took out some of the precious jewelry and gave it to the teacher. The teacher gave those to her, and she was very happy. There are many other such stories. King Light offered to Chandrakirti and others, and offered one hundred and eight golden vases filled with pearls as a fund for the monastery. He made great offerings to the temples and stupas of Magadha. A king named Flower King also built temples in the four directions, and made great offerings to many sanghas, built twenty monasteries and many stupas. The monk Liberation Army achieved accomplishment through many years of practicing Maitreya. At that time, the teacher Dulvaide came and composed some treatises. He saw Maitreya and sculpted his statue. According to his words, he sculpted a Tārā statue. The teacher Guṇamati was proficient in all sciences and Abhidharma. He followed Lodröten and also made a commentary on the *Nyāyabindu*. The teacher Chökyong was proficient in many sutras and saw the face of Kṣitigarbha.
