It is said. Sentient beings, what is the dharma by which they abide? They abide by food. Food, you have four kinds, namely, coarse food, contact food, volitional food, and consciousness food. Secondly, there are two kinds of food: material food and immaterial food. Incidentally, there are three types of intermediate existence. The first is that coarse food is in the desire realm and is the nature of the three sense bases. The sense base of the form realm is not, because it cannot help self-liberation. It is said. Coarse food has a nature that can be established, because it is established as food that is divided and eaten. It has two kinds, subtle and coarse. The subtle is like the food of the intermediate being, the gods, and the first kalpa of humans, etc., and the coarse is like the current coarse food, because the former does not have similar excrement after eating, and the latter does. Coarse food, in which realm does it exist and in which sense base is it established? You exist in the desire realm and are the nature of the three sense bases of smell, taste, and touch, because the upper two realms do not have attachment to coarse food, so there is no coarse food in those two realms, and the sense base of the form realm is not coarse food. The latter is reasonable, because it cannot help itself by encountering its own senses, such as the color and shape of food cannot be seen for those who are liberated from attachment to coarse food. The second is that contact, volition, and consciousness are foods with defilements, among those three. It is said. Immaterial food, you have three kinds, namely, contact, volition, and consciousness with defilements. Those three do not necessarily exist in only one realm, because they exist in those three realms. Those three are food that acts as a support, because contact causes the mind and mental factors to increase, volition causes abiding and growth, and abiding is done by consciousness. The third is mind-born, seeking existence, as well as গন্ধর্ব gandharva (梵文天城体:गन्धर्व,梵文罗马拟音:gandharva,寻香), intermediate existence, and accomplishment. It is said. The intermediate being is called mind-born, because it does not have a coarse, obstructive body, but is born only from the mind. It is called seeking existence, because it has the state of seeking existence.

Therefore, it is called "fragrance" because it is only fragrance that is consumed as food. It is called "intermediate existence" because it is the existence between the dying existence and the arising existence. It is called "manifestly accomplished" because it is the arising existence that is manifestly inclined. Third, summarizing the meaning through numbers: Here, there are two meanings of dwelling and the growth of dependence. There are two meanings of leading to another existence and accomplishing it, in that order. Thus it is said. Knowable phenomena, there is a reason for explaining food in four ways like that, namely, for the sake of the growth of the body with the senses dwelling in this life, there is coarse food, and for the sake of the growth of the dependent mind and mental factors, there are two kinds of contact food. For the sake of leading to and accomplishing another existence, there are two kinds of food: intention and consciousness, which are established in order. If it is a realm, it is not necessarily food, because the uncontaminated realms are not food. Why? Because food is established on top of the contaminated. If it is its food, it is not necessarily beneficial to its senses and elements, because even though it is its food, it is harmful to the elements. Fourth, regarding the mind of dying and passing away, with what mind does one die, with what feeling does one die, along with the incidental, from which part of the body does one die, and the cause of cutting off, these four. The first is: Cutting off and connecting, free from desire, decay and dying, all births, are considered only by the mind's consciousness. Thus it is said. Knowable phenomena, with what mind does one die? It is because the minds at the time of cutting off the roots of virtue, connecting the roots of virtue, being in meditative equipoise free from desire, completely decaying from that, dying, and being born, are mainly done only by the consciousness of the mind. The second is: Dying and being born are with equanimity, there is no one-pointedness or mindlessness in that, neither Nirvana nor prophecy. Thus it is said. With what feeling does one die? It is because dying and taking birth are definitely only with equanimity among the three feelings, because the feelings of pleasure and pain are very clear in appearance, so it is not possible for that. There is no dying and passing away in the state of one-pointed meditative equipoise, mindless cessation, and meditative absorption without perception, because there is no such change in that. Nirvana without remainder.
