Thus, (the discipline) also indicates through its actual meaning that the precepts of upholding the two hundred and fifty-three types of precepts of abandonment are contained within these two types of precepts. Many previous holders of the Vinaya said that the precepts of a Bhikshu are two hundred and fifty-three, but once any of the four root downfalls occur, they abandon the precepts that counteract each of them, but do not abandon the other precepts. Also, if one loses a remaining offense, they only abandon that portion of the precepts, but do not abandon the others. Among these two statements, the first is a place to be examined, and the latter is very unreasonable. Because merely committing a remaining offense does not cause one to abandon any precepts. Because no qualified person has ever said that doing so would abandon the precepts. For those who believe that the mind of abandoning precepts contains various seeds, it should also be applied in this way. Secondly, regarding the differences in downfalls. Generally speaking, faults have two types: enacted faults and natural faults. Their difference lies in the fact that a fault that is established merely by violating the enacted precepts that are mainly explained is the definition of an enacted fault. A fault that naturally arises without relying on enacted precepts is the definition or meaning of a natural fault. For example, a person who holds vows drinking alcohol, eating food after noon, holding the signs of a householder, abandoning the signs of a renunciate, touching precious jewels and fire, etc., and not doing Uposatha, etc., singing and dancing, etc., digging the ground, cutting trees, trading, etc., and the downfalls that arise from not properly using food and clothing, etc., are enacted faults or offenses. Whoever commits any of the ten non-virtuous actions, including the seven actions of body and speech and the three actions of mind, will become an offense, which is a natural fault. Whether or not one has taken vows, these faults will arise in dependence on the basis. Among the enacted precepts, except for drinking alcohol and eating human flesh, the others can be permitted depending on circumstances such as illness. However, for natural downfalls, there is no permission here to commit the four root downfalls. Others may be permitted depending on circumstances. However, in the case of the Mahayana, the seven actions of body and speech, such as killing, are also permitted, but the three actions of mind are not permitted, which is the difference. How do they arise? When generating the actual basis of the five classes of downfalls,

It is necessary to have someone who holds the precepts. If one has not taken vows, or has concealed root downfalls, even if joining the sangha, it will only constitute a minor offense. If an unconcealed downfall occurs, by giving the precepts, the root of the downfall will arise as it is. This is the view of the Vaibhashika school. As for how the downfall arises, in this case, consciousness is very important. If a bhikshu knowingly kills a person, he commits a Parajika offense. For a shramanera, a similar offense to Parajika will occur, and so on. There are also cases where the object is very important, such as engaging in impure conduct and emission of semen. In these two cases, the object is very important, so whether consciousness is confused or not is the same. Therefore, if one kills a person without the intention to kill, but due to confused consciousness, there are two possibilities regarding whether a Parajika offense is committed. This should be applied accordingly to other situations. Generally, a bhikshu killing a person results in a Parajika offense, a non-human killing a person results in a Sanghavasesa offense, and killing an animal results in a Patayantika offense. However, in cases such as confused consciousness, changing form, and changing names, there is a difference between the preparatory act and the actual act. For example, the preparatory act of killing a person constitutes a Sanghavasesa offense, but if one mistakenly identifies a person as an animal and kills them, the preparatory act is a minor offense, and the actual act is a Parajika offense. If one mistakenly identifies an animal as a person and kills them, the preparatory act is a Sanghavasesa offense, and the actual act is a Patayantika offense. If one mistakenly identifies a non-human as a person and kills them, both the preparatory act and the actual act constitute a Sanghavasesa offense. If these situations are distinguished in detail, there would be very many, but that is enough for now. Fourth, what changes occur when taking higher vows. Many previous scholars believed that if one takes the three vows of Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Secret Mantra in sequence, the earlier vows gradually transform into the later vows. Regarding this, there are two views, namely whether or not the foundation of these three vows is considered the same. Some say that according to the Vaibhashika school, the Pratimoksha vow is corporeal, but in the case of the Mahayana, the vow is only consciousness, or it is considered to be the mind of renunciation with seeds, so there is no contradiction, and it needs to be examined. In the view of the upper school, when taking these three vows, because they are taken from different types of rituals, they do not believe that a transformation occurs. They believe that, as many wise people have said, different prohibitions exist in the continuum of one person. However, since reason hinders the simultaneous existence of minds of renunciation that are of the same kind but of different entities, it is better that they are of the same entity or
