Therefore, it seems necessary to consider them as different in kind. Therefore, I think that in the tradition of the upper ones, it must be considered that the nature of the three vows is either the same or different. If the nature is the same, then when one is excluded, the other is not necessarily excluded, just like things and a vase. When the Bodhisattva vow is taken, the Pratimoksha vow becomes a branch of the Bodhisattva vow. When the mantra vow is obtained, both of these vows become branches of the mantra vow, because the upper one is more important. As Khedrup Je's "Taming the Wild Mind" says: "However, in certain circumstances, guarding the lower vows is also because it is seized by the special intention of the upper vows, so in certain circumstances, as long as it does not leave that cause, the lower vows also become branches of the upper vows. They are not sects without distinction, nor are they mutually exclusive, and one is excluded when the other is also excluded. For example, in a clear and stainless container, when very clear water is poured into it, and then gems or ghee, etc. are put in, then during that time, the color of the water also becomes a branch of the color of the gem. However, although water and gems are mutually exclusive, one is not excluded when the other is excluded." As it is said. However, merely being a branch of the mantra vow does not become the mantra vow. The three vows do not have a common basis, because the Pratimoksha vows are abandoned at the time of death, while the other two, if there are no obstacles, are ended with the essence of Bodhicitta. The common basis of the Bodhisattva vow and the mantra vow is also difficult to determine, because the mantra vow depends on empowerment, while the Bodhisattva vow does not depend on it. Furthermore, the three vows do not have a common basis, because the causes for taking these three are different, and the causes for abandoning them are also different. Otherwise, it would lead to the consequence that taking one is equivalent to taking all, and abandoning one is equivalent to abandoning all, which is not desirable. So, if a person who possesses the vows of a layperson, a novice monk, and a fully ordained monk commits the root sin of killing, then the fully ordained monk will abandon the vow of not killing, while the other two vows of not killing will not be abandoned, because the rituals for taking these three vows are different in kind, and when taking the upper two vows, the lower vows are not abandoned, as well as Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and secret mantra.

If asked, what are the reasons for determining the abandonment of these three vows individually? According to the Sarvāstivāda school, although these two seem the same, here they are not the same. Because, if a bhikṣu who possesses the three vows kills a person through the complete process of preparation, main action, and conclusion, then he will abandon all three vows of refraining from killing, which are the vows of a layperson, a śrāmaṇera, and a bhikṣu, in his own continuum. Because, the actual fundamental transgression of killing in this way is the same for the three, such as a layperson. However, it is necessary to examine whether the pārājika (defeat) on the part of the bhikṣu and the pārājika on the part of the śrāmaṇera's vows will occur or not. If one thinks that at that time, because one has not committed sexual misconduct, etc., the other three fundamental transgressions will not occur, some Sarvāstivādins and some ancients think so. But here, it is not thought so, because it is reasonable to admit that if any one of the four root transgressions occurs, the vows will be abandoned. For example, in the case of a house with four pillars, when one of the pillars is destroyed, the other three pillars cannot fulfill their purpose, so the house is also considered to be demolished. However, some scholars believe that in the case of mantra, even if a concealed fundamental transgression occurs, the prātimokṣa vows are not abandoned, because they consider it to be a characteristic of mantra and a difference in intention, which seems worthy of study. Some say that when taking higher vows and mainly protecting them, the state of the lower vows is like when the sun rises, the light of the moon and stars is present, but it is suppressed and does not appear. Others think that the three vows are like mixing wine, water, and milk together. Still others think that when the three vows of a layperson, etc., exist in the continuum of one person, it is like a stacked mound, or like wearing different ornaments, which is just an example. Fifth, what basis can be used to take what vows, and whether it is permissible to take them. It has already been said that a monastic cannot take the vows of a householder. In addition, a nyen-gnas (one-day observer) can take the vows of a layperson, but when taking them, one intends to abandon the nyen-gnas. Some think that a layperson cannot take the nyen-gnas, but many scholars think that if one knows the difference, one can take it. At that time, because the vows of a layperson are not abandoned, the vows of the nyen-gnas become the upoṣatha of the layperson.
