It is like placing a dam or weir to block the flow of water. A virtue of abandoning and restraining, which prevents falling, is born. When a layperson, etc., gradually takes the three vows, they obtain three different substances of vows gradually because they are taken from different rituals. However, it is not considered a transformation. As the Treasury of Knowledge says, "These differences are not contradictory." Furthermore, it is said that one can also obtain (the vows) from the Sangha or an individual, the three stages of the process of action (preparation, main part, and conclusion), whether the basis is a sentient being or not, the aggregates, elements, and actions, and even all sentient beings. Second, the manner of relinquishing vows: In general, there are two ways to relinquish vows: partially and completely. Relinquishing vows by giving up the training is as follows: If one only gives up the training of a bhikshu, one relinquishes the vow of a bhikshu, but not others. If one gives up the training of a shramanera, one relinquishes both the vows of a bhikshu and a shramanera. If one gives up the lay vows, then if one is without vows, or if a bhikshu with three vows gives up the lay vows in their own continuum, it seems that there is no need to relinquish the vows of a shramanera and a bhikshu. This needs to be examined. If one with three vows gives up all the vows at once, then one relinquishes all of them. Moreover, if a bhikshu takes the vows of a shramanera or a layperson, or takes the vows of a fasting person, they will also relinquish their own vows. If a bhikshu, with contempt, vows to become a householder, then they relinquish all the vows of renunciation. The seven types of individual liberation vows are taken with the vow to uphold them for as long as life lasts. If one has not vowed until then, then at the time of death, one abandons the body and thus relinquishes the vows, without fault. It is rare to relinquish vows without fault. Merely due to the successive appearance of male and female characteristics, one does not relinquish the vows, but if the two appear simultaneously, one relinquishes them. The Vaibhashika school believes in a person who has severed their roots of virtue. Therefore, when the roots of virtue are severed, one relinquishes the vows because there is no basis for the vows. The Madhyamaka school does not believe in a person who has severed their roots of virtue, because they believe that all sentient beings can attain enlightenment. In general, fundamental downfalls are not considered a cause for relinquishing vows, but according to the schools above the Chittamatra, if one commits a fundamental downfall, one relinquishes the vows. Moreover, if it is committed without concealment, one relinquishes the vows but can take them again later. If it is committed with concealment, it is considered that one cannot take them again. The Sautrantika school believes in no concealment.

If it occurs (a root downfall), because one does not relinquish the vows, it is not necessary to retake them. If it occurs with concealment, then one relinquishes the vows, and even if one retakes them, they will not arise, it is said. Here, 'with concealment' and 'without concealment' refer to, immediately after a root downfall occurs, expressing it to others without concealing it, with remorse, or even if one does not express it due to necessity, one still has great remorse. 'With concealment' refers to concealing it without remorse. The Vaibhashika school believes that no matter which of the two parajikas occurs, one does not relinquish the vows, but one deteriorates from the pure vows, and concealment also causes one to deteriorate from the ability to accomplish necessary tasks, because if that happens, it is said that one will not attain enlightenment in this life. Some, like the Niyogapas, say that if a parajika occurs with concealment, one relinquishes the vows, so there are different views. Vaibhajya says that in general, if one takes the vows of a householder, one relinquishes the vows of a renunciate, so it is not permissible to take them, but when one performs the upasampada again, one gradually performs it from the upasaka vows, so the old bhikshu vows are relinquished, and when one is fully ordained, new vows arise, so one needs to understand this difference. Third, explaining the differences in downfalls, there are two parts: on what basis the downfall occurs, and the actual differences in downfalls. The first part is: merely a slight fault occurs on both bases, whether one has taken vows or not, but the fault of a downfall only occurs to those who have obtained vows, and does not occur to those who have not obtained them. Vows are also established on the basis of pratimoksha, obtained by someone who has vowed to abandon the four root downfalls, and for someone who has not vowed to abandon the four root downfalls, there is only morality, and no pratimoksha vows. However, the vows of a bhikshu are established through abandoning the two hundred and fifty-three things to be abandoned, and not merely through vowing to abandon the four root downfalls. If all the two hundred and fifty-three precepts of a bhikshu are vows, then the number of vows would be large, and when a parajika occurs, all those precepts would be relinquished. If not, then only the precepts of abandoning the four root downfalls or abandoning the seven downfalls are vows, then the number of vows would be small. It seems difficult to answer this question. However, Buton Rinchen's commentary on the root text of the Vinaya says that the definition of pratimoksha vows is: 'This dharma is what I practice when I desire.'
