Having branches. Because merits and those with merits, etc., are also established in dependence, it is to be known that the meaning is that they are not established by their own nature. The fifth is: that self is not any one of the six elements such as earth, nor is it merely an aggregate, because of this reason. Because the Able One said in the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son: Great King, this person, the individual, is the six elements and the six places of contact, and the eighteen mental activities. Thus, I rely on the six elements called water, fire, wind, consciousness, and space by their own nature, and I rely on the six places of contact, the basis of eye, ear, etc., and I rely on holding the mind and mental phenomena and designate them as self. Therefore, it is definitely said. Neither any part nor any collection of the aggregates is established as self, because the co-emergent ego-grasping mind, which has been involved since beginningless time, does not focus on any part or collection of these dharmas as self, because of the reasons mentioned above. Although this does not regard any part or collection of the aggregates, or anything that is different in nature from the aggregates, as the main object of the view of the perishable collection, it does regard the merely dependently designated self as the main object of focus. Know that this shows the way to establish the selflessness of the person based on this, and this also needs to be well understood. In the commentary on this, it says: Therefore, neither any part nor any collection of the five aggregates, nor anything that is different in nature from them, is regarded as the object of the view of self, and even so, it is possible to establish the object of the view of self, the person, well, and based on these reasons, this kind of analysis that establishes the emptiness of the person's own nature is beautiful for those who are extremely sharp-witted and desire liberation, because this kind of captivating view does not exist in other schools. Therefore, it is said. The fifth is: Someone says, can one abandon self-grasping merely by seeing and becoming accustomed to the non-existence of the permanent, single, and independent self? Can merely knowing that the permanent, single, and independent self does not exist completely eradicate the view of self from its roots?

Speaking, your words are truly astonishing. When one directly realizes the selflessness of persons, it seems that one only wants to abandon the permanent "self," wanting to see it as non-existent. However, this "self" that desires in this way is unwilling to be the main object of the innate clinging to self, and any form of support, because that is undesirable. For example, some ignorant people see a snake living in a hole in the wall of their house, and they live there in fear. Another person dispels their doubts, saying, "Do not be afraid, there are no elephants in this house." But the reason for doing so also eliminates the fear of snakes, which is like other wise men laughing at him. The word "ཀྱེ་མ།" generally means both praise and disparagement, but here it refers to disparagement. How does this show the way it is meant to be expressed? Because it shows that if one does not prevent it in the way that one prevents innate clinging to self, but only prevents it in the way that one prevents imputed clinging to self, it will be like that example. The third part has two aspects: refuting the views of the support and the supported, and summarizing what has been refuted. The first aspect: The claim that the "self" and the aggregates are the support and the supported, and are established by their own nature, is merely established by inverted delusion. Because the "self" does not depend on its own aggregates in a way that is established by its own nature, and the aggregates are not dependent on the "self" in a way that is established by their own nature. Because if there is a "self" established by its own nature here, then the understanding of the support and the supported being established by their own nature would change, but the "self" and the aggregates are not established as different entities established by their own nature, so this is not the case. The "self" is not considered to be established by its own nature as having form, because it has already been refuted that the "self" and the aggregates are established as either the same or different by their own nature, so it does not exist there. The meaning of the "self" being combined with the aggregates does not exist in its own nature. If it is an essentially different entity, then it will be like "Devadatta has a cow." If one combines non-different entities like "Devadatta has form," then the combination of the "self" and form as the same or different does not exist in its own nature. The same applies to the remaining four aggregates.
