Because it lacks the qualities of being effective, and although it is the pervasive agent, it is established as having no function. Secondly, the Samkhya school asserts that there are twenty-five definite numbers of knowable things, namely: the general chief or nature (prakṛti), intellect or the great one (mahat), ego (ahaṃkāra), the five tanmātras such as form, the eleven senses such as the eye, the five elements such as earth, and the person (puruṣa) as the knower, totaling twenty-five. Among these, the general chief is only nature and not a transformation; the seven, such as the great one, are both nature and transformation; the person as the knower is neither of the two; and the remaining sixteen, such as the eye, are only transformations. As it is said in the Samkhya texts: "The root nature does not transform," etc., as quoted above. Although the differences between these should be explained, they are not discussed in detail here, because it is feared that they are too numerous, and they should be understood from the commentaries, etc. Secondly, just as the Samkhya school acknowledges the person, the tenets of the non-Buddhists differ based on slight differences in the person. The Vaisheshika school says that the person is the enjoyer with nine qualities: intelligence, pleasure, pain, desire, hatred, effort, dharma, adharma, and the force of action (saṃskāra); it is permanent, real, and the agent, but although it has qualities, it says that it does not have pervasive function. The Charvakas believe that due to the difference in the physical basis, the same person appears as many, and so on. Secondly, refuting these: that person established by those non-Buddhists is the subject, and is not truly existent, because it is separate from birth. For example, like the son of a barren woman. Such a person is the subject, and is not even suitable as the object of the two aspects of innate self-grasping, because it is unborn. This is the subject, and it is not even considered conventionally existent, because it is not considered to be, because it is not established by valid cognition in conventional terms, like the son of a barren woman. All the distinctions of the person thus conceived do not exist, because in the treatises of the Samkhya school and the Vaisheshika school, etc., regarding the distinctions of the person

Because all that is stated by the Tirthikas is refuted by the unproduced reason that is known to the Tirthikas themselves. For that reason, there is no self that is different in essence from one's own skandhas, because it is not established to grasp that self elsewhere except for grasping one's own skandhas. If it is not established, then just as a pillar can be grasped separately from a vase, so too should that self be able to be grasped as something other than the skandhas. This is not possible, because it has not been seen. Therefore, it is said in the Root Wisdom: The self is not suitable elsewhere than from what is taken up. If something else can be grasped without taking up, then it cannot be grasped. Because it is said that way. That self, which is different in essence from the skandhas, is also not considered to be the object of the innate ego-grasping mind of the world, because even though such a self is unreasonable, it is still seen as a self due to the difference in appearance. Therefore, there is no self at all that is different in essence from one's own skandhas. Those sentient beings who have spent many eons in the animal realm have not seen this unborn, permanent self as postulated by the Tirthikas, and it is seen that they also engage in ego-grasping. Therefore, it can be inferred that although they do not grasp the self as postulated by the Tirthikas, they do have ego-grasping. The second part has five points: showing the faults of considering the skandhas as the self, showing the reasons why it is not appropriate to consider them as such, showing other faults of considering the skandhas as the self, explaining the intention of saying that the skandhas are the self, and showing the irrelevance of other systems. The first part has two points: the actual and the refutation of objections. The first part has two points: stating the view and refuting the view. The first point is: some in our own school say that the object of the two types of views, self-view and annihilation-view, is only the skandhas, because it is not possible to establish a self that is different from the skandhas. This is the view of some of the inner schools such as the Sthavira and Vatsiputriya schools. Many respected people also believe that all five skandhas are the basis for self-view, because the sutra says: Monks, any sramanas or brahmins who correctly follow and see that there is a self, they only correctly follow and see these five aggregates of grasping.
