Because (the scripture) says, "Relying on one mind." Therefore, it refutes the permanent "self," thereby showing that the nature of mind is the agent. The second point is: When the sutra says "Mind-Only" and so on, this word "Only" does not negate external objects, because in the *Lankavatara Sutra*, it is like a vajra of the nature of speech that destroys the mountains of evil views that consider the self and the general lord, etc., of the omniscient heretical sects' traditions to be the creators of the world. The sutra says: 'Person and continuum aggregates, likewise conditions and particles, lords, sovereigns, and creators, I say are only mind.' This shows that the teacher said this in order to cut off the intention of the 'Mind-Only' mentioned in other sutras. There is a need to say this, because it is for the sake of increasing the wisdom of those with wisdom who can realize Suchness. The meaning of the sutra is like this, because as in the respective treatises of the heretics, the heretics say that persons, etc., that is, continuums and aggregates, etc., are the agents, but the Victorious One did not regard them as agents, but said that only the mind is the agent of the world. The third point is: When the sutra says 'Mind-Only,' it is not saying that the mind is truly established and that external form does not exist, to negate it in this way, because that is not the meaning of the sutra. So, how should it be understood? Just as when it is said, 'One whose wisdom is vast in Suchness is called a Buddha,' although the preceding word 'Buddha' is not obvious, the meaning refers to 'Buddha.' Here too, it is the same; among the two, form and mind, for the mind that has become the main one, the latter main word is hidden, so the teacher said in the sutra that for the world, that is, the three realms, it is Mind-Only. The reason for saying this is that if, as you think, if you know that these three realms are Mind-Only established by nature, then in the *Ten Bhumi Sutra*, why would the Great Self-Buddha say that the mind consciousness is born from the two, ignorance and karma of action? It is not appropriate to say that.

For that reason. The reason is, if external objects do not exist and the mind is self-existent, then dependent arising is unreasonable. The reason is, if it is self-existent, then it will change without depending on conditions. Knowable phenomena, the mind is the creator of the world, because the mind itself arranges or generates the extremely diverse appearances of the sentient world and the container world. The reason is that sentient beings arise from their own unique karma, and the container world arises from shared karma, and that karma is also accumulated by the mind. The reason for that is that the Teacher said that all beings arise from their own black and white karma. Because without the mind, karma does not exist. The sutra passage in the Ten Bhumi Sutra that says "only mind," you refute that beings other than the mind, such as Ishvara, are the creators of the container and its contents. External objects of form are not negated, because even if you think that form exists, that form does not have the function of moving back and forth like the mind. The second case is, if you think that external form does not exist, then do not cling to the existence of the inner mind. Even if you think that the inner mind exists, do not think that external form does not exist, because whether external objects exist or not, meaning and cognition are the same. According to the way shown earlier, the conventional truth abides in designation, and external aggregates of form, etc., are known in the world, and all five aggregates exist. If you want the wisdom that realizes that suchness to arise, then when a yogi enters into samadhi, in the appearance of that samadhi, those five aggregates will not appear. Furthermore, whether external objects exist or not, meaning and cognition are the same. In the Prajnaparamita Sutra, the Buddha equally refutes self-establishment of the five aggregates such as form. But in the Abhidharma, it is equally declared from the perspective of self-characteristics and common characteristics. Mind-only proponents, even if you destroy the order of the two truths, conventional and ultimate, and make distinctions, other-powered self-establishment will not be established even if you try to establish it.

As you wish, the dependent nature established as an external object is what has been previously refuted, therefore, with that kind of order as previously stated, phenomena from the beginning are not originally suchness, but arise in worldly terms, this should be understood. If the order of the two truths is established without being destroyed, then it must be admitted that cognition and object do not exist ultimately, but exist nominally in the same way. The third (ultimate truth), divided into two: stating that the mind-only without external objects is definitive, and stating the means to understand the definitive and non-definitive meaning of the sutras. The first, divided into two: stating the definitive meaning by scripture, and stating the definitive meaning by reasoning. The first, divided into two: the meaning of the main text, and stating that other similar sutras are also definitive. The first is: other scriptures, such as in the "Lankavatara Sutra": "External appearances exist or not, the mind appears in various forms, body and enjoyment, I say are only mind." Meaning, external objects do not exist as they appear, but the mind appears in various forms such as body and enjoyment. This is the subject, your refutation of external objects has an intention, because you (Buddha) are in order to dispel the afflictions arising from attachment to form for those who are very attached to form. Therefore, this sutra is also a definitive sutra. This sutra is what the Buddha declared as definitive, and this sutra is also established by reasoning as definitive. The first reason is: because it is said in the sutra "Like a sick person to a sick person." The second is: not only "External appearances exist or not" etc. are definitive, but also the sutras that the mind-only school considers definitive, such as the "Samdhinirmocana Sutra" which declares that the completely imputed does not exist ultimately, while the dependent and the perfectly established each exist ultimately, and the sutras such as "The taking-aspect consciousness is very deep and subtle," these are all the subject, are definitive sutras. Because in the "Lankavatara Sutra," the Buddha declared the definitive meaning, such as "Great wisdom, emptiness and non-arising, like a sick person to a sick person, a doctor gives medicine, thus the Buddha to sentient beings, declares only mind."
