So it is. Furthermore, the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra states: The three realms are merely imputed; in reality, they have no substance. Those who speculate fixate on imputed entities as real. Since there is no inherent existence and no consciousness, and since the ālaya-vijñāna is empty and without substance, speculative thinkers are like foolish children, like corpses, hence these are all imputed. Therefore, the third (examining the absence of external reality) has three parts: word meaning, general meaning, and ultimate analysis. First, if knowing that external objects do not exist and that they do not arise by their own nature, then how does the knowledge of a clear appearance of a skeleton arise? The object of knowledge, it is not contradictory for it to arise in that way, because a yogi, relying on the meaning of the guru's oral instructions, practices the contemplation of impurity, and thus sees a vast ground filled with skeletons. Although the three—object, faculty, and consciousness—are falsely present there, all three are seen as not arising by their own nature. It should be so. Because the samādhi that appears in this way is said in the sūtras to be due to focusing the mind on a reversed, i.e., untrue, object. Mind-Only proponent, when you watch a theatrical performance, how do the objects of the sense consciousness of one person's faculty appear in the nature of that knowledge, and how do they appear to other viewers as well? Similarly, a yogi who contemplates impurity will also see the object. Then, as he sees it, a non-yogi who focuses on the skeleton object will also understand the skeleton, because the knowledge that appears in this way is established by its own nature. If you assert that, then this samādhi should also not be a false, i.e., reversed, object of focus, because you assert it. The consciousness of some hungry ghosts seeing pus and blood in the river where water flows should also not be an example of knowing that external objects do not exist and that they are established by their own nature, because it is the same as a person with cataracts seeing hair strands. Second, the Mind-Only proponent's use of the example of dreams to explain that knowing external objects do not exist and that they are established by their own nature is not reasonable, and the examples of a person with cataracts seeing hair strands and the arising of consciousness of a river appearing as pus and blood are also not reasonable, because these are the same as what needs to be established and cannot be established.

When three beings with karma—a god, a human, and a hungry ghost—simultaneously look at a full bowl of water, there are different appearances. Which one's perception is established by valid cognition? Which one's perception is not established by valid cognition? It should be said that when these three beings simultaneously look at that object, although that full bowl of water is not a common basis for these three, at that time it arises as having three components. That is, with the moist liquid as the proximate cause of one component of that full bowl, and with the karma of the hungry ghost as the cooperative condition, based on this, one subsequent category of that component transforms into pus and blood. Similarly, this can also be applied to humans and gods, transforming into water and nectar respectively. Therefore, at that time the water transforms into having three components, but not all three see all three components. The karma of the hungry ghost causes it to see pus and blood, and not see the other two components. Similarly, this should also be applied to other situations. That is, the water is initially regarded as a common object of observation, but when it transforms into having three components, not only do these three not see the object with components, but when only the hungry ghost begins to enjoy it, since this is an object enjoyed exclusively by the hungry ghost, a similar subsequent category will transform into pus and blood. When these three sentient beings simultaneously look at that object, there are also examples of three component objects established by valid cognition arising. For example, with one component of a red-hot iron ball as the proximate cause, and with applying an iron mantra to the hand as the cooperative condition, based on this, when that hand touches that iron ball, it does not experience the touch of heat, but experiences another touch. And when a hand without an iron mantra touches it, it experiences the opposite. Also, in summer, with one component of moonlight as the proximate cause, and with the karma of the hungry ghost as the cooperative condition, based on this, the hot touch experienced by that body consciousness arises. And in winter, with one component of the touch of sunlight as the proximate cause, and with the hungry ghost as the cooperative condition, based on this, the cold touch experienced by that body consciousness arises, like this. The first is
