As for the subject, you also consider there to be two types: the clear sense faculty that is not tainted by temporary causes of confusion, and the consciousness that relies on it; and the faulty sense faculty that is tainted by the causes of confusion, and the consciousness that relies on it. Therefore, the consciousness of sense faculties that possess such faults is the subject. Relative to the consciousness of the sense faculty that has become good and is not tainted by it, it is considered to be a mistaken consciousness, because it is a consciousness tainted by temporary causes of confusion. The objects apprehended by the six sense faculties that are free from the harm of temporary causes of confusion, such as forms that are understood by the world, are the subject. They are truths that depend on worldly convention, because they are phenomena that cannot be mistaken by conventional valid cognition that does not directly perceive suchness. The remaining images, echoes in valleys, water in mirages, and so on, are the subject. They are established as mistaken in dependence on worldly convention, because the previous valid cognition can mistakenly apprehend them. Secondly, if here, in dependence on worldly convention, we distinguish between correct and incorrect, what is the difference between the two? There is a difference: temporary causes of confusion, such as cataracts, jaundice, and eating Datura fruit, etc., are internal causes, and water, sesame oil, the sound of a cave, and the sunlight of spring near white sandy ground, etc., are external conditions. The sense consciousnesses that arise in dependence on being tainted by these, and the mental consciousnesses that arise in dependence on all these conditions, duality, bad tenets, and fallacious reasoning, etc., and these together with their objects, are mistaken in dependence on worldly convention. The sense faculties and mental consciousnesses that are not tainted by such causes, and their objects, are true in dependence on it. The first has the property, because depending on such conditions, there is the sense consciousness of hair falling out in a solitary place, and the apprehension of a white conch as yellow, and the apprehension of an image as a face, and the sense consciousness and conceptualization of apprehending a mirage as water, etc., arise. The latter two have the property, because depending on being tainted by these.

The sense consciousness cognitions with objects, which arise from conditions, can be recognized as unreal by the knowledge of those who claim to be authoritative in the world. The sense consciousness cognitions with objects, which are not disturbed by such factors, cannot be recognized as such by that knowledge. There are many causes of confusion, such as existing in the object. For example, when grasping at water in a mirage, the condition exists in the object; when appearing to see trees moving while on a boat, the condition exists in the support; when a sense consciousness arises that shows the ground as red, the condition immediately exists in the co-operative condition; when a sense consciousness arises that shows hair falling out in pure coral, the cause of confusion exists in the dominant condition. Like the image of a face and the consciousness that grasps it, the object and subject that depend on worldly convention are reversed, because without relying on the realization of emptiness, it can be recognized by those who claim to be authoritative in the world as not established as it appears. Like the face and the consciousness that can grasp it, the subject that depends on it is real, because without relying on the realization of emptiness, it cannot be recognized by those who claim to be authoritative in the world as not established as it appears. It is necessary to say "temporary cause of confusion," because one does not want the innate cause of confusion, such as innate ignorance, or the fundamental cause of confusion, to be the cause of this kind of confusion. The object of attachment of the temporary cause of confusion, namely the grasping at self and the two imputations, cannot be determined without relying on the realization of emptiness, because the absence of an object of attachment is emptiness. The Consequentialists do not distinguish between the conventional as correct and incorrect, because in the conventional truth, the distinction between the conventional truth that is established as it appears and the conventional truth that is not established as it appears is unreasonable. Because: if it is a conventional truth, then it is pervasive that the way it appears appears as true, but the actual situation is established as false. The Autonomists and Consequentialists both have reason to distinguish between the sense-direct perception of the root consciousness grasping at form in the continuum of the path of seeing as mistaken and not mistaken, because the Consequentialists admit that it is mistaken, while the other party does not admit it, which depends on whether or not they distinguish between the conventional as correct and incorrect, and whether or not they admit self-establishment.
