If being a cause is reasonable, then being an effect is also reasonable. If cause and effect are reasonable without dependence (on others), then all unrelated other things could become cause and effect, which would lead to absurd inferences. The "other" of "other-origination" is not merely the other of cause and effect, but refers to the other that is established by its own nature. As the commentary says, "Thus, the other of other-origination is not merely other, but is the other that is established by its own nature. Therefore, admitting this leads to very absurd inferences." Therefore, being able to properly refute other-origination also depends on being able to properly recognize the extent of the self-established object to be refuted, and being able to refute it. Otherwise, even if one claims to have refuted it, it will only become empty talk. The second part is divided into two points: eliminating faults and responding to them. The first point is: Someone says that there is no fault of everything arising from everything, because any cause that can produce any effect is necessarily said to be the cause of that effect. Any cause that can produce that effect, even if it is a self-established other, is a cause. The sprout of Salu is not produced from different kinds of seeds such as barley and wheat, so not everything arises from everything. The sprout of Salu belongs to the same self-continuum and is produced from the previous continuation of the same kind. If you say so, then the second point is: This is not reasonable. For example, the stamens of barley and lotus, and the flowers of Cassia fistula, etc., are others. They are not considered to be the cause of the Salu sprout, nor do they have the ability to produce it, do not belong to the same continuum, and are not the previous kind similar to it. Similarly, the seed of Salu should also not be the cause of the Salu sprout. This would lead to an absurd inference, because according to your view, cause and non-cause are the same in terms of the self-established other. The second part is divided into two points: refuting other-origination with cause and effect being sequential, and refuting other-origination with cause and effect being simultaneous. The first part is divided into two points: the main text and eliminating disputes. The first point is: The sprout appears to be different from the seed, and the sprout does not exist simultaneously with its own seed.

Yes. Because the sprout cannot be seen without the seed transforming. How could the seed of the sprout become something other than the entity established by the sprout? It will not change, because there is no other entity established by its own nature. This view that sprouts and other things arise from others should be abandoned, because it is reasonable to do so, because the sprout does not arise naturally from its own seed. Secondly, someone says that the sprout and its own seed exist simultaneously. For example, the two sides of a scale, one high and one low, are not non-simultaneous, but simultaneous. Therefore, the sprout to be produced and the seed that produces it, in order, the two actions of arising and ceasing are simultaneous, so the seed and the sprout should also exist simultaneously. If so, it is unreasonable to think of it this way using the example of the scale. Even if the two actions of high and low at the ends of the scale exist at the same time, in this example, the seed and the sprout do not exist at the same time, so there is no simultaneous situation. If it is said that the sprout is growing at the time of the seed, and that growing means that it is now facing growth, so it does not exist at the time of the sprout, and the seed is dying at its own time, so it exists at its own time, but is considered to be facing destruction, if this is the case, then how can these two seeds and sprouts be the same as the high and low of the scale at the same time? It is not so, because the two actions of the scale are simultaneous now, and the seed is the present that exists at its own time and is dying, and the sprout is the future that does not exist at the time of the seed and is growing at that time. The author sprout does not exist at the time of his own birth action, but the action of the sprout being born exists without the author sprout, which is also logically unreasonable, because the action depends on the author to be established. So, in the Holy Rice Seedling Sutra, isn't the quotation of the example of the scale contradictory? It is not contradictory, because that is not an example of the seed and the sprout being simultaneous, but an example of action.
