Because it is said so. Therefore, the clinging to phenomena as previously described, which are not merely established by names and terms, is the clinging to truth. That is what is refuted by reasoning. If it were established as held by the clinging to truth, it would be called: truly established, ultimately established, genuinely established, established as suchness, established by its own characteristic, established by its own nature, established from its own side, established independently, established as substance. These are the objects of refutation by the valid signs that examine ultimate truth. All the refutations and affirmations that arise below are for the purpose of refuting the establishment of forms and so on as those, and for the sake of being able to validly establish the distinctions of bondage and liberation and actions on mere nominal designations. The nature of phenomena, although it is truth, nature, suchness, ultimate truth, and reality, is not truly established, etc. Because being true is established, etc., and being truly established, etc., have different meanings. In short, all phenomena are merely imputed by conceptual thought. As it is said in the "Inquiry of Nearness": "Various pleasing flowers bloom, Golden mansions blaze with splendor, Here and there are no makers, These are established by the power of thought. By the power of thought, the world is imputed." And also in the "Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning": "Since the world is conditioned by ignorance, Why did the perfect Buddha say? Therefore, this world, Why should it not be conceptual?" Because it is said so. Those are merely established by names and terms. As it is said in the "Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son": "Like a city of গন্ধর্ব (Tibetan: དྲི་ཟ།, Sanskrit: gandharva, Romanization: gandharva, Meaning: গন্ধর্ব), however it appears, That city is not in the ten directions nor elsewhere. The city is merely established by name, Likewise, the Sugata sees this world." And also in the "Garland of Jewels": "Since the object of form is merely a name, Space is also merely a name." And so on, and "Apart from the imputation of terms, What is there that changes into being and non-being? What exists in the world for the sake of reality?" Because it is said so. Even so, it is believed to exist by the power of self-grasping conceptual thought and the agreement of name and meaning, but it does not necessarily exist if it is established by disagreement of meaning, because truth

Because things like establishment are also imputed by self-grasping conceptual thought. Therefore, the imputation of 'I' on the aggregates by conceptual thought, and the imputation of a snake on a rope, and the imputation of a person on a stump, although these are all equally imputed by self-grasping conceptual thought, there is a difference. Because there is an 'I' on the aggregates, but there is no snake on the rope, and there is no person on the stump. The reason for that is that the 'I' on the aggregates can be established conventionally, as it is known to the innate mind of worldly convention. But the other two cannot be established in that way. The reason for that is that the designation of 'I' on the aggregates is not only not harmed by the valid cognition of worldly convention, but it is also established. But the other two are harmed by other valid cognitions of worldly convention. The way that this arises is not the meaning of being established from the object, because whatever object appears, it follows the meaning that is in accordance with it. Second, explaining the measure of what is to be refuted according to the system of the Svātantrikas, there are two parts: stating the scriptural authority to be explained, and explaining the meaning of the scriptural authority. The first is: From the Light on the Madhyamakāvatāra: 'That mind of delusion that imputes the opposite aspect to things that are truly without intrinsic nature is called conventional, because this or by this it is like obscuring that very nature.' As it is also said in the sutra: 'All phenomena arise conventionally, in the ultimate they have no intrinsic nature, whatever delusion arises towards what has no intrinsic nature, that is considered to be true convention.' Thus it is said. Because it arises from that. By this, it is closely indicated that all false things that are seen are only conventional. That also arises from the power of the complete ripening of the beginningless imprints of delusion. By that, all sentient beings will truly see the appearance as if it were the nature of things, therefore, due to their thoughts, the nature of all false things exists only conventionally. Thus it is said. Second, explaining its meaning, the meaning from 'things are true' to 'like obscuring' is: external and internal things are true, that is, the nature of being established in the ultimate is absent, but the conceptual thought that grasps it as existing, the subject, you are called conventional.
