The selflessness of defilements, and merely preventing it on dharmas other than that, is established as the selflessness of dharmas. As the commentary on the Four Hundred says: "That which is called 'self' is the nature of things that does not depend on others. The absence of that is selflessness. It is understood in two ways by distinguishing between dharmas and persons, namely, the selflessness of dharmas and the selflessness of persons." Because it is said. Furthermore, if one knows how to establish all dharmas as merely conceptual constructs established by the power of conceptualization, then the extent of true establishment that is established from the object, rather than merely conceptualized by conceptualization, or the extent of what is to be refuted, will also be easily determined. Because it is important to know that both persons and dharmas are merely conceptual constructs. It follows that, if there is self-grasping conceptualization of forms and other dharmas, then they exist, and if there is no self-grasping conceptualization, then they follow and cease accordingly. Therefore, there is an example of something established by conceptualization. For example, when a little darkness falls on a variegated rope, when the thought arises, "It is a snake!", none of the individual parts of the variegated rope, nor its shape, nor its collection, nor any other part of it, can be taken as the basis of that snake. Therefore, at that time, it is as if a snake is merely imputed on the variegated rope by self-grasping conceptualization. Likewise, the Four Hundred says: "Without conceptualization, there is no existence of attachment, etc. Who with intelligence would grasp true meaning and conceptualization?" And its commentary says: "Only with conceptualization does existence exist, and without conceptualization, existence does not exist. Those are definitely not established by their own nature, like a snake imputed on a coiled rope without hesitation." Similarly, that too is merely imputed by conceptualization on the basis of the aggregates. When the thought of self-grasping arises on the aggregates, none of the individual parts of the aggregates, nor the shape, nor the collection, nor anything else, can be taken as the basis of that self. Therefore, that self is merely imputed on the aggregates by conceptualization. As the Precious Garland says: "A person is not earth, not water, not fire, not wind, not space, not consciousness, not all, what other person is there? A person is the aggregation of the six elements."

Because it is said, "How is it that it is not true?" Not only am I, but also the parts of my aggregates, and all dharmas, are not established by their own nature. In that, it says, "Likewise, each element is not truly real because it is assembled." Also, in the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says, "As you understand me, so should wisdom be applied to all." Also, in the Compendium, it says, "As I am, so know all sentient beings. As all sentient beings are, so know all dharmas." Therefore, it is meaningful that form and so on are merely designated by names. Among these various dharmas, the terms "vase," "pillar," "blanket," "cloth," "giving," "offering," and "sacrifice" are designated. If one is satisfied with just that and engages in the practices of acceptance and rejection, one will not be deceived. If one is not satisfied with just that and still wants to engage in acceptance and rejection by designating and searching for whether the designated object is the same as or different from its own parts, one will not be able to engage in it. For example, if one asks, "Who is the lama?" and one merely points out, "This is the one on the throne," one can meet him if one visits him. If one is not satisfied with just that and needs to examine whether the designated object, the lama, is the same as or different from his own parts, then one will not be able to meet him. Because, in the meaning of conventional terms, it is permissible to make conventional investigations. If one makes ultimate investigations, it will be destroyed. Because it says, "One should not analyze conventional truth." In this case, although we acknowledge that the conventional system conforms to the world, it is not in accordance with whether foolish people of the world acknowledge it or not. If that were the case, then it would be necessary to assert true existence, because it would follow that there would be such a fault. The Bhagavan said that the conventional system is established by following the conventional valid cognition of the world or innate intelligence. In the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it says, "The Buddha speaks according to the power of worldly convention, not according to the power of true speech." The Bhagavan said, "The world argues with me, but I do not argue with the world. Whatever the world considers to exist, I also consider to exist. Whatever the world considers not to exist, I also consider not to exist."
