Identifying the vessel for explanation. How virtues arise from explaining it. Encouraging those with the capacity to listen. How the suchness of dependent arising is explained. The first has two parts: the meaning of the words and the general meaning. The first is: O glorious Chandrakirti, you should explain truthfully, according to how the suchness is taught in the treatises of the noble Nāgārjuna. Just as that bodhisattva on the sixth ground realizes the most profound Dharma, so too, through the scriptural authority of Nāgārjuna's Root Wisdom and so forth, and moreover, through reasoning, the suchness of Dharma is ascertained, therefore. The second is: Well then, what is the means of knowing that one who ascertains the suchness of profound dependent arising is following the protector Nāgārjuna? There is such a means: the protector Nāgārjuna is a person of authority prophesied by the Victorious One himself to ascertain the profound meaning. This is so, as it says in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: In the south, in the country of Vidarbha, there will be a monk, glorious and greatly renowned. His name will be called Nāga, he will destroy the sides of existence and non-existence. In my teachings, he will thoroughly explain the unsurpassed Great Vehicle, attain the Joyful Ground, and go to Sukhāvatī. It is said, and moreover, it is prophesied in the Great Drum Sūtra, the Great Cloud Sūtra, the Mañjuśrī Root Tantra, the Kālacakra Tantra, and so forth. Although the Great Drum Sūtra speaks of up to the seventh ground, this is not contradictory, because it is made from the perspective of showing the activities of emanation. The second is: What kind of vessel is it that teaches suchness? There are two aspects to this: how to abandon non-vessels and how to explain the purpose. The first is: The profound suchness should be explained to those who are to be trained who have planted the habit of listening, but it should not be taught to those who are not suitable vessels, because some, without any faith, from merely hearing the words of emptiness, desire to abandon it. Others, although they seem to have faith, do not distinguish between selflessness and non-existence, and grasping them as the same thing, give rise to wrong views of denying cause and effect, and increasing them, they will eventually fall into the lower realms.
