That person who, on the basis of holding the "I" to be established by its own nature, also grasps the person as being established by its own nature, is like a lord who is a ruler independent of the aggregates. To hold one's own aggregates as being established by their own nature, and to hold the person as a ruler dependent on that, is the way of grasping a person as being self-sufficient. Because emptiness, as it is grasped in that way, is the meaning of the emptiness of a person who is self-sufficient and substantially existent. There is also a difference between what is innate and what is imputed in this. The conceptual thought that grasps in this way arises naturally without relying on changing the mind through philosophical tenets, and there is the grasping of the person as being dissimilar in characteristics from one's own aggregates after changing the mind through philosophical tenets. Of these two, the former is innate, and the latter is imputed. Such a conceptual thought does not grasp that the person exists merely as an imputation of the collection, parts, and continuum of one's own aggregates, but clearly grasps it as being self-sufficient. For, in the continuum of a person who has a continuum, if one has the power to exchange this bad body of one's own for a body like that of a lord of the gods, then the appearance of clinging to oneself as the one who exchanges is manifestly present. As it is said in the *Pramanavarttika*: "Because of striving for the sake of other superiors, and because of being one who has the thought of arising and ceasing, this person, through power and so forth, will know that the self is different." Therefore, that is why it is said. Secondly, this way is not only the intention of the Venerable Chandrakirti, but also the intention of the Bodhisattva Shantideva. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryavatara*: "Seeing the truth brings liberation, but what is the use of seeing emptiness?" Thus, having set forth the debate that without relying on realizing emptiness, merely realizing and becoming accustomed to the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence, one can attain liberation and nirvana. As an answer, to show that it is not possible in that way, it says there: "Because this path is not in the scriptures, it is said that there is no enlightenment. The root of the teachings is the monk, but even being a monk is difficult. For those whose minds are connected with objects, even attaining peace is difficult." And so forth, and: "A mind that is separated from emptiness, after ceasing, will arise again, like the absorption of non-perception." And: "Even without afflictions, for those, karma
