Just like the non-Buddhists who are devoid of manifest clinging, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddha Arhats should also be able to be suppressed by the power of the wisdom that realizes emptiness, because both Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas equally lack the wisdom that realizes emptiness. Because Bodhisattvas have the wisdom that realizes emptiness. Secondly, the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats, like non-Buddhists, have not abandoned all the afflictions that operate in the three realms, because they have not found the path that contradicts the clinging to the self of persons and the manner of clinging, which is the root of those afflictions. Because they have not fully understood that phenomena lack inherent existence. Thirdly, they have not fully realized the selflessness of persons, because they have never directly realized the selflessness of persons. Because they are bound by inverted conceptualizations that cannot refute the object of clinging of the conceptualization that grasps the aggregates, which are the basis of designation for persons, as being inherently established. Because they have not fully understood that the aggregates lack inherent existence. As it is said in the auto-commentary: From this scriptural statement, it is clearly established that the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also fully understand that all phenomena lack inherent existence. If it were not so, because they do not fully understand that phenomena lack inherent existence, they would also be suppressed by a Bodhisattva who has generated the mind of enlightenment, through analysis with his own wisdom, just like those who have abandoned worldly desire. And they would also not abandon all the subtle defilements that operate in the three realms, like non-Buddhists. Because they are inverted by focusing on the self-nature of form and so on. They also will not realize the selflessness of persons, because they focus on the aggregates, which are the basis for designating the self. Here, some say: In order to attain liberation from samsara, which is nirvana, it is necessary to realize that phenomena lack inherent existence, because the root proposition is valid. If you accept that, then it is not necessary, because without relying on the realization of the lack of inherent existence of phenomena, merely by establishing through hearing and thinking that the aggregates, which are independently existing substantially existent persons, are empty of either being one or different in nature, and then meditating without separating from the limbs of meditation, reaching the culmination of extreme habituation.

If someone says that because there is a direct realization of the meaning to be habituated, it is said that in this way, by the power of that, one abandons afflictions and is able to manifest the fruit of an Arhat. This is not flawed. Even though one does not rely on the realization of the lack of inherent existence of phenomena, there is a direct realization of emptiness by the self-sufficient substance of a person. However, since it is not the path of newly seeing that directly—the path of seeing—nor is it the path of making the habituated familiar a constant practice—the path of meditation—these two cannot abandon the imputed and innate afflictions. Therefore, in order to explain that saying that one abandons them in that way is interpreted here as provisional. It is indeed so, because in this context, the emptiness of the self-sufficient substance of a person is considered to be the coarse selflessness of a person, not the subtle one. Furthermore, some assert that one can attain liberation and Nirvana without relying on the realization of the lack of inherent existence of phenomena, because by relying on realizing and habituating the sixteen aspects such as coarse impermanence, one can attain liberation and Nirvana. This is because one can attain liberation and Nirvana by relying solely on the path described in the two Abhidharmas. This is because the liberation described therein is liberation. This is because the Arhat described therein is an Arhat. This is because the Arhat described therein exists. If someone says that, it is not pervasive. If it is not established, then this is because the four pairs of individuals and the eight types of persons described therein exist. According to our own system, without relying on the realization of the lack of inherent existence of phenomena, merely by directly realizing and habituating the emptiness of the self-sufficient substance of a person, although one can temporarily abandon the conceptualization that grasps the self-sufficient substance of a person as real, one cannot abandon the clinging to truth together with its seeds, because that path is not a path that directly contradicts the clinging to truth and the manner of clinging. So, in this system, if the emptiness of the self-sufficient substance of a person described in the two Abhidharmas is considered to be a coarse emptiness, then what is the meaning of the emptiness of the self-sufficient substance of a person? In that way, how are the conceptualizations that grasp at substance established as both imputed and innate? That also exists.
