Not only is there direct knowledge, but there is also subsequent knowledge. As stated in the commentary, it is established by the reasoning that the path of faith is present in the seven impure grounds. Furthermore, there is a path of meditation that becomes the essence of the first ground. As stated in the Great Commentary, the first moment of the first ground is the path of seeing. From the second moment until the uninterrupted path that is called Vajra-like Samadhi, and from that immediately until the ground of complete enlightenment of the Buddha, all of these should be known as the path of meditation. Thus it is said. I prostrate to all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and the assembly of noble beings. Third, the explanation of the expanded body of the base knowledge. In this context, there are two parts: the reason for explaining the base knowledge at this time, and the explanation of the meaning of the text. The first is: The object of knowledge, after explaining the knowledge of the path, there is a reason for explaining the base knowledge, because the aspect of the base knowledge must be cultivated through fully understanding the sixteen aspects such as impermanence of birth in the mind, and it will not arise without it. As the commentary says, without fully knowing all the bases, there will be no complete knowledge of the path, so it is necessary to know everything. Thus it is said. The second part is the explanation of the meaning of the text, which is divided into the main text and the conclusion of the three knowledges. The first part is divided into three parts: explaining the path of proximity to the mother of fruition, explaining the application of the base knowledge, and explaining the result of cultivating the application. The first part is divided into three parts: the reason for proximity, establishing the reason itself, and explaining the difference between the unfavorable side and the favorable side. The first is: From "not on the shore, not on the other shore, not on the edge" to "it is considered the perfection of wisdom." The meaning of the words is: The perfection of wisdom of the base knowledge mentioned here is considered close to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, because it is the wisdom that directly grasps the equality of the three times of phenomena without true nature. That Dharma does not abide on the edge of this shore of samsara and the edge of the other shore of peace, because it is the path that prevents the two extremes. That Dharma does not truly exist even between those edges, because it is the wisdom grasped by the wisdom that directly realizes emptiness.

Therefore, the difference between the two extremes of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa mentioned here is that the extreme of saṃsāra is the extreme of saṃsāra in relation to the basis of conventional truth, i.e., saṃsāra, and the extreme of nirvāṇa is the extreme of nirvāṇa in relation to that, i.e., the annihilationist nirvāṇa. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, do not abide in the extreme of saṃsāra mentioned here, because they do not take birth in saṃsāra under the power of karma and afflictions. Bodhisattvas, take birth in the place of saṃsāra, because the reason for taking birth there is that they possess both skillful means such as love and compassion, and the special wisdom. Bodhisattvas, also do not abide in the extreme of nirvāṇa mentioned here, because they do not seek to attain nirvāṇa that is merely the cessation of karma and afflictions. Bodhisattvas, do not seek such nirvāṇa, because for the sake of sentient beings, they take birth in the place of saṃsāra, accomplish their benefit, and strive for enlightenment. Second, establishing the reasons for nearness and distance is what is said from "That is through focusing on characteristics" to "Said to be truly near." The meaning is: Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, the Prajñāpāramitā of the basis of knowledge is distant to you, because you focus on the characteristics of the basis of reality, that is, through the way of grasping, it is not held by the method of generating the fruition mother. Bodhisattvas, the Prajñāpāramitā is said to be truly near to you, because you are skilled in the method of generating the fruition mother, and are held by the realization of emptiness. This is not merely having clinging to reality, but is determined by whether or not clinging to reality binds, because in the system of the third case, Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize emptiness, therefore they are considered to be bound by clinging to reality. Bodhisattvas, because they have experienced the realization of emptiness, therefore they are not bound by it. The meaning of being bound by clinging to reality also exists, because they have not realized emptiness, and are temporarily unable to escape from clinging to reality. Third, explaining the distinction between dissimilar and favorable factors, divided into: abandoning and counteracting clinging to characteristics on the basis path, abandoning and counteracting clinging to characteristics on the result, and the concluding explanation in three parts. The first part is divided into two types: dissimilar factors and favorable factors, the first of which is: from "Form, etc., aggregates emptiness" to "The perception of behavior is a dissimilar factor." The meaning is: how to summarize the basis of knowledge
