At the time of death, if one recognizes the clear light of death, one can merge with the Dharmakaya, which is the meeting of mother and child. If one does not recognize it, it cannot be called the meeting of mother and child. As it is said in Je Rinpoche's "Short Treatise on Blending": At the time of death, the clear light that arises spontaneously from the four emptinesses is the mother clear light, and the clear light that was meditated on during sleep is the child clear light. When these two merge into clear light at the time of death, it is called the blending of the mother and child clear light. The detailed method of blending should be learned in the context of the blending section of the Completion Stage. The meaning of the second verse is: In the stage of the path, the three emptinesses—emptiness, great emptiness, and the emptiness of great emptiness—and the fourth emptiness that transcends these three, that is, at the time of all emptinesses, by the fire of Brahma, which is like the swiftness of lightning, that is, by igniting the fire of tummo at the navel and secret place. By its heat, the white bodhicitta, the rabbit-marked one at the crown of the head, gradually melts, descending from one's own crown to the throat, then to the heart, then to the navel, then to the secret place. From this arises the innate bliss, and at the time of clear light, the wisdom that realizes the emptiness of inherent existence. May I be blessed to single-pointedly place my mind on this wisdom, in which these two are united indivisibly. Generally, in the waking state, one practices the union of bliss and emptiness by igniting tummo and melting the bodhicitta. But here, it is said that one practices in this way at the time of death. This seems to refer to generating bliss by igniting tummo before death, so that at the time when the three appearances of death and clear light arise, the union of bliss and emptiness will naturally occur. It may seem difficult to ignite tummo at the time of the appearances of death and clear light, so one should contemplate this carefully. These are in terms of the stage of the path. In the stage of the base, even if the three appearances and clear light arise, one cannot practice the union of bliss and emptiness. In summary, the mind consciousness arises as the nature of innate bliss, and by this, one realizes the emptiness of phenomena without error. This union of object and subject is the meaning of the union of bliss and emptiness here. Furthermore, at that time, the special bliss that arises itself realizes emptiness, and one does not differentiate between bliss and wisdom as two separate entities.

The meaning of this needs to be learned in detail from others. If the prana has not entered the central channel, then the meaning of uniting bliss and emptiness at this time is not complete. Here, let's examine it a little. The special case of being in 'thugs dam' (meditative absorption), which is separate from the Dzogchen order, is said to occur when one is in the light of example and meaning. Such thugs dam requires not only prior experience of emptiness but also prior practice of the speech isolation of the Dzogchen order. In that regard, some people now say they are in thugs dam without having done these things. In response, the great scholar Sangye Gyatso's writings say, 'Those who have no meaning or practice, who are merely posing, pretending, and have dull senses, saying they are in thugs dam, this is completely and openly lying.' Nowadays, in religious circles, some attendants of lamas consider it thugs dam and merely support the corpse with wood, etc. As stated above, it is possible that there are people who are truly in thugs dam, but in most cases, it does not seem to be so, and some are even said to have become corpses. The twenty-first booklet of the Guhyasamaja says, 'This is called the light of death. Ordinary people stay in it for three days.' As it says, even if it is not true thugs dam, if consciousness does not come out of the corpse, both good and bad results will occur. However, it is said that consciousness comes out immediately after death, or stays for two and a half days, one day, or even less. True thugs dam, as stated in the 'Manjushri Oral Instructions,' 'For eight hours or a day, or a month, or a year, or an eon, or a thousand eons, experience that wisdom.' As it says, this is possible. Therefore, without the special practice of the Dzogchen order, saying that one is in thugs dam is either imitating thugs dam or, as before, a pretense. In general, the so-called thugs dam is not definite, because verbal virtuous deeds are also called thugs dam. The thugs dam of death also depends on the activity of the mind; what is the point of the body sitting stiffly and rigidly? Without even understanding this much difference, they pull at the flesh and say thugs dam.
