Third, there are two aspects to taking the path of the incarnate body: general teachings and specific explanations. The first is: the four signs of the elements reversing, etc. In the bardo state, the sign of one's earth element reversing is like being pressed underground, and the appearance and sound of mountains and rocks collapsing. When the water element reverses, there is the appearance and sound of sinking into the depths of the ocean and great rivers flowing. When the fire element reverses, there is the appearance and sound of a great forest burning. When the wind element reverses, there is the appearance and sound of being carried away by a great storm. These are the four fears of the elements reversing. The three fearsome appearances are: some consider them to be fear, dread, and panic; others consider them to be the fears of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals; and the fears of sound, light, and rays. Others consider the radiance of desire to be a white cliff, the cliff of hatred to be red, and the cliff of ignorance to be black, with the appearance of almost falling or falling into these three great cliffs. However, Panchen himself, in his explanation of the bardo, says that they are fear, dread, and panic, so it is as in the first explanation. Furthermore, at times there is playfulness and joy, and at other times there is sadness and fear, and many other uncertain signs appear in various forms. When unpleasant appearances arise, seeing them as pure lands is the outer path. Meditating on all fearsome appearances as the forms of deities is the inner path. Seeing all of this as mere illusory appearances, like emptiness and illusion, is the secret path. Through such practices, may we be blessed to be born in special, pure lands. In the great scriptures of Sutra and Tantra, the signs of the four elements dissolving at the time of death are explained, but the appearance of the four fears of the elements reversing in the bardo is not clearly stated, except for some mention in the great scriptures of Tantra. However, it appears in some instructions, and the same is true for the three fearsome appearances. Uncertain signs are clearly explained in both Sutra and Tantra.
