Then, it follows that the application of the term does not depend on convention, because when saying "You are a pot," the basis of the term is established by its own characteristics from the perspective of the state of affairs. If you concede, then it follows that the thought of "This is a pot" arising upon seeing a large belly arises independently of convention, because of conceding that. If you concede, then before the large belly is named "pot," merely seeing the large belly would also give rise to the thought, "This is a pot." Therefore, the large belly, you are the basis of the term "You are a pot," but you are not established by your own characteristics, because before you are named "pot," there is no thought of that. The second reasoning is that when one person is given many different names such as Indra, Thousand-Eyed, etc., those names should apply to that person by the power of the object, because the basis to which those names apply is established by its own characteristics. If you concede, then just as there are many names, the object of the basis of application should also be many. From that consequence, one object is not established by its own characteristics as the basis of application for many names, because one object does not become many. The third reasoning is that when two different people are given the same name "Auspicious," that name should apply to those two objects by the power of the object, because those two different objects are established by the power of their own state, being the basis to which the one name applies. If you concede, then just as the name is the same, the two objects should also become one. From that consequence, those two objects are not established by their own characteristics as the basis to which the two names apply, because you are different entities. However, according to the Sautrantika view, if the direct object expressed by the term "pot" is established by its own characteristics, then there is the fault that the thought of "This is a pot" arises independently of convention. But for sense consciousness, the large belly, as the basis for the application of the name "pot," is established by its own characteristics according to its appearance, so there is no such fault. Although they say this, the Mind-Only school cannot distinguish such a difference, but refutes and prevents it by reasoning. Also in the *Yogacarabhumi* and the *Compendium of Determinations*,

After explaining such reasoning, it should also be applied to other tenets. Then, although these reasonings can understand that the imputed, which is imputed on entities and differences, is not established by its own characteristics, how can one understand that forms and other external objects are empty? One can understand, as just explained, when forms and other objects become the object of attachment for self-grasping conceptual thought, and it is refuted that they are established by their own characteristics, then, the conceptual thought that clings as it appears will become confused about the object of attachment. Once that is established, by its power, the sense consciousnesses that appear in that way will also become confused about their respective objects of appearance. Once that is established, the appearance of blue and other forms in the sense consciousnesses is not because external objects transmit their own forms back and cause them to appear, but because the sense consciousnesses that manifest themselves are understood to arise as the very nature of blue and so on. Therefore, blue and other forms are established as being one with the consciousness that manifests itself. Once that is established, blue and other forms will be established as being empty of any substance different from the consciousness that manifests itself, and therefore one will understand that there are no external objects. Furthermore, in refuting external objects in relation to sense consciousnesses, what is meant by "external objects"? In this regard, we must first briefly discuss the views of the two schools of substantialists regarding external objects. In general, both of them believe that external objects exist because forms appear to a person who apprehends forms as being at a distance. In particular, the Vaibhashikas believe that blue and other forms that appear in that way are apprehended by the eye sense through direct contact without any intervening form. The Sautrantikas believe that they are apprehended through the appearance of such forms in the eye consciousness. Moreover, since atoms are not objects of sense consciousness, they believe that the gross objects that are aggregates of partless atoms are external objects. Although the Prasangikas also accept external objects, they do not accept the external objects described above. Therefore, although the reasoning that refutes external objects refutes that gross objects that are aggregates of partless atoms are external objects, they do not believe that external objects in general are refuted. The Sautrantikas believe that blue and the sense consciousness that apprehends blue are established as appearing at a distance, and they believe that such an appearance is an external object that arises from the object's side transmitting its own form back. The views of both the Svatantrikas and the Cittamatrins are that there are no external objects.
