Furthermore, the characteristic of the first aspect of the similar dharma is that it is the characteristic of the cognition of the opposite; while the second aspect is that it is the characteristic of the non-cognition of the opposite. To establish the latter characteristic mentioned above, it can be argued that: that dharma, in its own nature, is not a different thing from the aggregates, because it is nominally established on the basis of the aggregates. The Svatantrika school and below believe that merely by realizing and becoming accustomed to such selflessness, one can abandon self-grasping and thus attain liberation. They also believe that such innate self-grasping in the continuum of ordinary beings is also the root of samsara. Thirdly, in the view of the Cittamatra school, the selflessness of persons is as previously explained. There are two ways to establish the selflessness of phenomena: one is that the imputed, which is imputed on entities and characteristics, is not established by its own nature; and the other is that forms, sounds, etc., are empty of external objects. They believe that both of these are the teachings of the intermediate turning of the wheel of dharma, and are established by the final turning. As the meaning explained in the *Samdhinirmocana Sutra*, *Yogacarabhumi-sastra*, *Mahayanasamgraha*, *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, etc., was definitively determined by Je Tsongkhapa in *Essence of Eloquence*, if we summarize the essence extensively explained by Khedrup Rinpoche in *Empty Tube*, it is as follows: The two Hinayana schools believe that forms, etc., as the basis for imputation of entities and characteristics, are established by their own mode of existence. Such imputation is, for example, imputing blue things as "This is a form," which is the imputation of entities; imputing "This is the arising of form" or "This is the cessation of form," etc., as characteristics. They do not deny that blue things, etc., merely exist as entities and characteristics, but they deny that they are established by their own nature. That is, forms, etc., as the basis for the terms of entities and characteristics, exist merely as nominal designations, but they are not established by their own nature, so it is necessary to refute the view that they are established as they appear. Therefore, for forms, etc., as the basis for the terms of entities and characteristics, merely the appearance of appearance is also accepted by the Sautrantika school as an imputation that is not established by its own nature. Since they also accept that this cognition is an illusion, merely the appearance of not being established by its own nature is not the subtle selflessness of phenomena. What is it then? Here, the Sautrantika school believes that arising from stable imprints

The sense consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, consider themselves not to be mistaken about their appearing objects. These sense consciousnesses consider that objects, such as forms, appear to be established by their own characteristics as the basis for applying the terms of entity and difference, and they believe that they are established as they appear. Therefore, they negate establishment there, and that negation is established as the selflessness of phenomena. That is, in this context of Vijnanavada, when a person with conventional understanding sees blue, the eye consciousness perceives blue as blue, blue appears as an external object, and there are three ways of appearing that become the basis for applying terms such as 'this blue is a form' and 'this is the arising of a form.' The reason for this is that the very appearance of how blue appears to the eye consciousness is made the object of memory, and clinging to it, the conceptual thought that makes terms such as 'this is blue' and 'this is the arising of blue' is drawn by the blue-grasping eye consciousness by its own power. If one asks what the entity of the meaning of saying 'blue' is, the blue-grasping eye consciousness clings to the very appearance of how blue appears to it, and the motivation to answer that its entity is form is drawn by the power of that eye consciousness. Therefore, when blue appears as blue to the blue-grasping eye consciousness, one should know that there is a way of appearing that appears to be established from the perspective of its own state, not just the establishment of a name. Therefore, the meaning of the eye consciousness's entity, as the basis for applying the term 'blue is blue,' appearing to be established by its own characteristics, is like that. Even so, because it is a difficult point to understand, only those with intelligence who are focused inwardly can understand it, while others will be confused even by the words themselves. Therefore, Vijnanavada considers that even the direct perception of the blue-grasping sense faculty in the continuum of an ordinary being is mistaken about its appearing object, and it considers that the conceptual thought that arises from being drawn by it is the self-grasping of phenomena that is mistaken about the object of clinging. The two schools of meaning proponents consider that the expressed object of the sound that says 'blue is blue' is a self-returning conceptual imputation, and therefore it is not established by its own characteristics. However, they consider that the basis for applying the sound 'blue is blue' is established by its own characteristics.
